The thermal spa resort of Uriage-les-Bains is located between the municipalities of Saint-Martin-d'Uriage and Vaulnaveys-le-Haut. Several themes can help you plan your trip: buildings and stories relating to thermal history, the park’s historic design, or walks along a named route. Regional products also feature on menus; the selection varies by establishment and season.
Thermal History and Buildings
The Fontaine de la Déesse Hygie is a monumental tuff-stone structure. Pierre-Victor Sappey created it in 1847; it depicts Hygie, the goddess of healing. The “Sur les traces de la marquise” experience explores the beginnings of the thermal spa through historical stories and architectural discoveries. While the fountain focuses on a specific building, the experience combines history and architecture.
The Spa thermal d’Uriage is open to spa guests, residents and people passing through. The Casino d’Uriage is located in the Palais de la Source. Prémol lies at an altitude of 1,095 m; a meadow there offers a place to relax. The ruins include the former women’s Carthusian monastery, founded in 1234.
Thermal Park and Walking Trails
The Parc Thermal d'Uriage Les Bains in Saint-Martin-d'Uriage extends for just under two kilometres and covers an area of 200 hectares. Its preserved historic design includes elliptical paths, groups of trees, a bandstand and a cement bridge with a wood-effect finish. The groups of trees include Himalayan pines, some of which are two hundred years old.
The Circuit pédestre des Curistes passes through Uriage and Vaulnaveys-le-Haut. Along the way, it passes villas from the last century and the idyllic banks of the Vernon. Signposting and conditions may change; check them before setting out. The Circuit pédestre des Crêtes starts at the Office de Tourisme d'Uriage-les-Bains, 5 Avenue des Thermes, 38410 Saint-Martin-d'Uriage. The routes therefore differ in how they guide you: for the Circuit des Curistes, the places it passes through and features of the route are named; for the Circuit des Crêtes, the starting point is given.
Getting There and Regional Cuisine
Uriage-les-Bains can be reached from Grenoble and Gières by public transport. Check current services and timetables before travelling, as transport services and routes may change.
Menus in Uriage-les-Bains include dishes featuring local specialities: river trout, mushrooms from Voreppe, guinea fowl from the Trièves, Grenoble walnuts and well-known cheeses from the Dauphiné. What is available depends on the establishment and the season. When planning, you can therefore consider regional dishes as a focus alongside thermal history, the park’s design and walking trails. If a particular speciality is important to you, check the establishment’s menu in advance.
