Sillans lies in the heart of the Bièvre Plain. South of the village, the La Ravageuse river crosses marshes and meadows; the northern part consists mainly of farmland. The river landscape and agricultural areas can therefore be understood as two distinct geographical features within the same municipality. The cardinal directions provide a concrete framework for considering the area’s natural and cultural themes.
Ponds and natural features
The three ponds of Plan are among the municipality’s natural features. They form a chain on the edge of Les Moilles. Their areas are 13,360 m², 21,880 m² and 8,790 m² respectively; the largest measures 21,880 m², and the smallest 8,790 m². The 13,360 m² figure falls between the other two sizes. At Étang de Chanclau, information boards explain the pond’s fauna and flora. Thus, the focus at Plan is on the location, chain formation and areas of the municipal ponds, while at Étang de Chanclau it is on explaining the animal and plant life.
Hiking route and Château de Sillans
One specific hiking option is the “De la cité de Mandrin au Château de Sillans” route. Rated easy, the route is 8.96 km long and passes through Sillans. Château de Sillans is located along the route at kilometer 4.29. The total distance and kilometer marker answer different planning questions: 8.96 km describes the length of the hike, while kilometer 4.29 indicates the château’s location on this specific route. The kilometer marker is just before the halfway point of the overall distance. The keep of Château de Sillans is very well preserved. The route description thus combines a distance and difficulty rating with a specific building along the way.
Church and industrial history
The town’s history includes the church known as Église St Joseph, as well as the industrial histories of Dynamic and Le Trappeur, which are associated with Sillans. Their development spans the period from artisanal workshops at the beginning of the 20th century to a heyday as an industry, and is connected to the history of French skiing. This timeline thus distinguishes artisanal beginnings from later industrial development. The church and the industrial histories provide distinct cultural points of reference: one is the name of a local place of worship, the other a historical development connected to French skiing.
Putting events in context
The “Sur le Sentier des Arts” festival is a traditional annual event in the village. The fifth edition was documented in 2024; a sixth was announced for 2025. If you would like to plan your visit around the festival, check the dates for your travel year. An earlier Easter fair in Sillans included almost 70 vendors and rides in 2016. The details of the two events refer to different time periods: the festival information mentions the fifth edition and an announcement for 2025, while the fair’s size is explicitly stated for 2016.
