Discover Saint-Julien-De-Raz through its landscapes, architecture and a hike. The Grande Sure is reflected in the small lake, while fossil gorges and a karst spring are among the natural features of the Gorges du Bret. Other points of interest include the pulpit in the church and traces at the site of a former castle. These varied attractions offer specific points of interest for visitors interested in nature and culture alike.

Landscape: lake, gorges and spring

The small lake lies at the foot of the site of the former castle. The Grande Sure is reflected in its waters. The lake thus combines a distinctive landscape with the historical setting of the castle site. The Gorges du Bret reveal another side of the area: these fossil gorges now provide access from the Voironnais to the first foothills of the Chartreuse Massif. The lake and gorges therefore offer different points of interest: the mountain silhouette reflected in the water on the one hand, and a geological formation and its connection to the Chartreuse Massif on the other.

The Fontaine du Vieil Homme is also located in the Gorges du Bret. It is a small karst spring: its water emerges from the rock, forming a vaulted structure. Its geological classification, the water emerging from the rock and its distinctive shape are all part of what makes it notable. Those interested in landforms will find a clear contrast with the lake: in one case, a mountain is reflected in the water; in the other, water emerges from the rock.

Another distinctive building is the Neo-Gothic Chapelle du Saquet. It lies south of the village on a narrow, wooded terrace, from which it overlooks the village. The Neo-Gothic chapel overlooks the village from its narrow, wooded terrace south of the village.

Church and castle site

The pulpit is located in the nave of the church in Saint-Julien-de-Raz. Since 26 January 2001, it has been listed as a protected movable cultural property under protection order no. 2001.544. Its design is precisely described: five panels feature low-relief carvings of gilded foliage on a green background. Low relief means that the ornaments project only slightly from the surface; the gilding and green background also define the colour scheme. Its protected status, location and design make the pulpit a distinctive cultural point of interest.

The layout of the fortifications and a cistern remain at the site of the former castle. A depression suggests the presence of a corner tower. The castle’s historical purpose is also documented, although its exact date of construction is unknown: the Count of Savoy had it built on the border between Savoy and Dauphiné to monitor the Voreppe gorge and the ducal castle there. The historical connection thus extends beyond the castle site to this gorge and the castle located there.

Hiking in Saint-Julien-De-Raz

For a longer activity, the Le tour du Grand-Ratz circular trail is a clearly described option. This moderately difficult hike is 13 km long, takes about 4 hours and 1 minute, and starts at 1 Place des Charminelles in Saint-Julien-de-Ratz. The distance and duration provide two practical measures for planning your day: this is a hike lasting several hours, so it makes sense to set aside a dedicated block of time. Check trail conditions and access before setting out.

The local attractions also differ in how they fit into a stay: the circular trail has a stated difficulty, distance and duration, while the lake, spring, chapel and pulpit offer specific natural and cultural points of interest. This lets you plan the time needed for the hike separately from your other interests, rather than treating all the sights as a single itinerary.
