Meylan can be explored through a variety of themes: local history and religious heritage walks sit alongside public green spaces, waterscapes and expansive mountain views. When planning your visit, it helps to first choose the focus you want. The cultural routes each have a distinct theme, while parks and natural areas offer their own opportunities for observation. This makes it easy to shape your stay around an interest in history, landscapes or wildlife.

Local history at Clos des Capucins

Clos des Capucins is a public park covering more than five hectares. The former château at the Clos was converted into a Capuchin monastery; at the beginning of the 17th century, the site was known as Château du Cizerin. Its château history, monastery and green space make the Clos a distinctive place to discover Meylan’s heritage. If you want to combine historic names and uses with a walk in the greenery, this is a fitting place to focus on.

The Meylan heritage walk “Entre culture et religion” includes 20 stops and leads from Saint-Victor Church to Clos des Capucins. Its named endpoints give the religious and cultural theme a clear route. The walk is therefore particularly suited to exploring which historic places are linked together by a route.

Walks with different themes

Those interested in water can explore the walk “À la découverte de l'eau, hier et aujourd'hui.” It includes 22 stops; its title alone connects the subject of water with the past and present. “À travers champs” offers a different focus: this walk also has 22 stops, but is devoted to Meylan’s rural past. The same number of stops therefore represents different thematic focuses—water through time on one route, and the town’s rural history on the other.

La Grande Traverse offers another way to discover Meylan. This footpath, lined with hedges, crosses the town from east to west. Along the way, it draws walkers’ attention to 25 selected places connected with landscape, urban planning, history, rural life, water and nature. While the two walks each have a clearly defined theme, La Grande Traverse brings together different facets of the area. This can help you choose if you want to explore more than just one historical or landscape feature.

Parks, trees and wildlife watching

Parc des Étangs is the five-hectare public part of the Maupertuis estate. Observation points and facilities for wildlife are part of this green space, along with rare tree species: oriental plane trees, a giant sequoia and a California incense cedar grow there. The park thus combines opportunities for wildlife watching with remarkable trees. For a nature-focused visit, these features offer a different point of reference from the historical themes of Meylan’s walks.

Boucle de la Taillat is a designated Espace Naturel Sensible (sensitive natural area) in Meylan. It offers sweeping views of the Belledonne, Chartreuse and Vercors mountain ranges. Along the pond’s banks, you can watch kingfishers, Eurasian hobbies or grey herons searching for food. If you plan to travel by bike, Boucle de la Taillat can be reached from the Grenoble metropolitan area via the cycle paths along the Isère.

Little discoveries and local traditions

At Parc du Bruchet, the analemmatic sundial invites visitors to take part: they can use their shadow to read the solar time. Your own shadow becomes part of the display—an engaging way to understand how a sundial works and a change of pace from the themed walks.

The Charlaix bread oven also connects local history with a recurring tradition. The municipality acquired and renovated the oven in 1989. Every year in June, on the morning of St John’s Day, people gather there to bake bread together. This is a distinct cultural landmark in Meylan, alongside the parks and paths devoted to history, landscapes and nature.
