Expansive alpine pastures, rocky landscapes and glaciers define Clavans-en-Haut-Oisans. Hikers can choose from routes to suit a range of time budgets, from a short walk to waterfalls to a six-hour trek. The villages also tell the story of life in the mountains, both through their architecture and the way their houses are used.

Alpine Pastures, Glaciers and Wildlife

On the eastern side of the Grandes Rousses, Clavans-en-Haut-Oisans encompasses high-alpine landscapes with rocky terrain and glaciers. Sheep graze in the alpine pastures. Vultures are present there in summer, although their presence varies depending on conditions. The commune is also home to a golden eagle nesting area. Wildlife is therefore closely linked to the different landscapes and the seasons; however, a vulture sighting cannot be guaranteed as a fixed part of any itinerary.

Lac des Quirlies also shows how the mountain landscape changes: it formed after its glacier retreated. Granite moraines surround the lake, with views of the Plateau d’Emparis from there. To explore this landscape on foot, you can plan a hike to the lake. The route starts and ends in Le Perron, near Clavans-le-Haut, passes through Clavans-en-Haut-Oisans and covers 13.5 kilometres there and back. The hike is listed as taking six hours, with 944 metres of ascent and descent. As route details may change if the trail or its conditions change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Mountain Villages and Architecture

In the villages, houses are adapted to the slope. Large rooms were used to store hay and shelter livestock in winter. This architecture shows how closely the use of buildings is connected to the conditions of mountain life. One example can be found in the hamlet of Perrons, where a house leans against a protective rock. It illustrates how building design responded to hazards in the mountains.

Hikes to Suit Different Time Budgets

A shorter hike leads from the car park at Col de Sarenne to Croix de Cassini. The route is listed as 4.6 kilometres long, taking two hours and 15 minutes, with 421 metres of ascent. The summit offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding peaks and mountain ranges. By comparison, the hike to Lac des Quirlies requires considerably more time and elevation gain. Exposed sections and seasonal conditions affect access to Croix de Cassini; check conditions before your hike.

The short walk to the waterfalls of Pont Ferrand takes less time and is described as family-friendly and easy. Trail conditions may vary. The waterfall gathers the waters of the Ferrand Valley; even at low water, its flow remains substantial because the streams are fed by glaciers. Another hike leads to Clos Chevaleret, a valley basin formed by the waterfalls of Pont Ferrand. This makes it possible to explore the area’s waterscapes either on a short walk or on a hike to a distinctive valley head.

Col de Sarenne and Other Activities

Col de Sarenne can be reached by bike, on foot or by car, and connects Clavans-en-Haut-Oisans with Alpe d’Huez. Road access may vary seasonally, especially in winter. To explore the area in the snow, ski touring from Clavans-le-Haut can take you to the Plateau d’Emparis or the Massif des Grandes Rousses; weather and snow conditions determine what is possible. The GR®54 long-distance hiking trail can also be reached from Clavans-en-Haut-Oisans.

For bouldering, Grand Sablat is an option with clear requirements: the site is above 2,300 metres and requires a very high level of climbing or bouldering ability. Conditions and access may vary. Overall, it is worth choosing activities not just by their name, but also by the time required, elevation gain, season and your own ability. That way, you can explore the mountain landscape during your stay in Clavans-en-Haut-Oisans in a way that suits your itinerary.
