In Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, mountain railways, hiking trails and cultural themes come together. The Tramway du Mont-Blanc takes you to a destination in the high mountains; the Sentier du Baroque follows a route to churches and chapels. There is also a walk to old fortified houses and an exhibition on the history of mountaineering. When planning, first consider which of these different experiences you want to shape your stay.

Getting There and Rail Connections

Two names and their destinations are important for rail connections: the Mont Blanc Express connects Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet with Vallorcine. The Léman Express connects Saint-Gervais-les-Bains with Geneva. Depending on where you are travelling to or continuing your journey, a different connection may be relevant. Services and timetables can change, so check the latest times before finalising your connection.

Mountain Railways and Seasonal Experiences

The Tramway du Mont-Blanc runs from Le Fayet at an altitude of 580 metres to Nid d’Aigle at 2,372 metres. The route is 12.4 kilometres long. This gives you both the endpoints and elevations for the journey. The tramway gives families safe access to a high-mountain experience. Check seasonal operating details before your trip.

In winter, the tramway takes pedestrians and skiers to the Les Houches ski area; winter service is seasonal. The Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area is a separate destination: from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, it can be reached by gondola lift to Le Bettex. This ski area also operates seasonally. If skiing is part of your trip, take the relevant seasonal conditions into account when planning.

The two rail services differ in their destinations and types of journey: the Tramway du Mont-Blanc is associated with Nid d’Aigle and, in winter, also provides access to the Les Houches ski area. The gondola lift goes to the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area as far as Le Bettex. Keeping these destinations separate helps you choose a suitable activity, rather than treating different mountain railways as interchangeable connections.

Baroque Trails and Local History

The Sentier du Baroque starts in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and is an easy 6.5-kilometre hiking trail, one way. It connects the Baroque churches and chapels of Saint-Gervais and Saint-Nicolas de Véroce. The route is suited to plans that focus not only on the trail itself, but also on the connections between the sacred buildings.

The route to the old fortified houses offers another way to explore the history of the area. This one-hour walk through Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is designed as a self-guided tour, with information panels and a brochure. Guided tours are available on request. For planning your day, you therefore have two clearly different options: a one-hour route through the town or the 6.5-kilometre hiking trail, one way.

The Maison forte de Hautetour is a former building dating from the 13th century. Its permanent exhibition covers mountaineering and the history of the Compagnie des guides. Temporary exhibitions and artist residencies add to what is on offer; the temporary programme may change. This lets you combine a cultural focus with a specific local history, without conflating it with the themes of the hiking route.

More Things to Do During Your Stay

Les Bains du Mont Blanc offer a three-hour spa experience indoors and under the open sky. Check the current access conditions before booking. This activity has a different time commitment from the one-hour walk to the fortified houses and can be considered as a separate activity when planning.

When looking for a hotel in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, the differences described here can be a useful starting point: would you rather spend your time on a mountain railway journey, a hiking route, local history or a spa experience lasting several hours? The duration and distance information can help you assess individual activities without turning them into a fixed itinerary. Choose the focus that suits your planned trip, and check seasonal services and timetables in good time.
