Vinezac brings together a medieval village layout, hiking trails through hilly and wooded landscapes, and winegrowing in the commune. You can plan your visit around different interests: the village’s architectural history, a stroll or circular hike, and local wine production.
Discover Medieval Vinezac
The medieval village is characterised by narrow, vaulted lanes. Densely clustered houses made of local sandstone line the lanes; ochre tones and white accents define their appearance. The former centre was enclosed by a fortified wall, which is now invisible. Openings to the outside were created to enlarge the adjoining houses. The layout of the settlement therefore tells the story both of its former fortifications and of how the houses were extended.
Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation was rebuilt in the Romanesque period using local sandstone and altered over time. It is one of the first listed monuments in the Ardèche département and was protected in 1907. Its dome is adorned with Italianate decoration dating from the late 18th or early 19th century; the four Evangelists are depicted at its base.
Château Julien is also part of the village’s architectural heritage. The château is thought to have been built probably towards the end of the 12th century. A machicolation and a loophole have survived as defensive features. Dry-stone huts are also scattered throughout the commune. They served as shelters and storage rooms and are known in the region as capitelles or capitels. The names and dry-stone construction give these buildings a distinctive place in Vinezac’s rural heritage.
Hikes with Different Highlights
The poetic trail “Entre rimes et pierres” offers a walk of about an hour, during which you can see around ten capitelles. Trail maintenance and the selection of poems may change, so check the current conditions before setting out.
The circular hike “Les hameaux de Vinezac” links several hamlets within the commune. It leads from gentle, cultivated hills to the pine forests at the foot of the Cévennes. The condition of this route may also change, so it is advisable to check for updates before setting off.
The two routes differ mainly in format: “Entre rimes et pierres” is defined by its approximate duration and the capitelles, while “Les hameaux de Vinezac” focuses on the hamlets and changing landscapes. If you prefer a walk with a clear time estimate, the poetic trail gives a duration of about an hour; for a circular hike through the commune, “Les hameaux de Vinezac” highlights the places along the route and the landscape.
Landscape and Winegrowing
Vinezac lies at the foot of the Parc naturel régional des monts d’Ardèche. There, chestnut and beech forests give way to olive groves, vineyards and holm oaks. Fig orchards are another Mediterranean feature of the commune; its vineyards are associated with the AOP “Côte du Vivarais”.
Domaine du Père Léon was founded in 2016, is located in Vinezac and has five hectares of vines in production. Mas de Bagnols farms its vineyards organically and harvests the grapes by hand. The estate invites visitors to visit, taste its wines and learn about its production methods. It produces wines under the Côtes du Vivarais and Chatus designations; Chatus is considered an emblematic grape variety of the piémont cévenol. Check the producers’ information again before your trip; in particular, the visits and tastings offered by Mas de Bagnols may change.
