Saint-Julien-du-Gua offers several different ways to enjoy a getaway: a circular hike with specific timings, natural areas with a variety of habitats, and local heritage sites. This lets you decide whether hiking, scenery or history should be the focus of your trip.
Hiking with specific details
The circular hike “Saint-Julien-du-Gua – Du Gua à La Pervenche” is rated moderate and designated as a PR walking route. It is 10.7 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3 hours 15 minutes. It returns to its starting point at Place de l’église. The route crosses the Natura 2000 site “Vallée de l'Eyrieux et ses affluents” and follows the River L’Auzène for about 500 metres before crossing it via a footbridge. The “Saint-Julien-du-Gua – Autour du Ruisseau de Gournier” hike crosses the Ruisseau du Gournier twice. The water crossings therefore differ clearly: on the La Pervenche loop, a riverside stretch is followed by a bridge, while the Gournier route includes two crossings of the stream.
Landscapes in the ZNIEFF areas
The ZNIEFF inventory, dated 2 November 2015, also includes the “Ruisseau de l’Auzène” area in Saint-Julien-du-Gua. It gives the presence of the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) as the reason for its designation; the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) has also been recorded in the Ruisseau de l’Auzène.
A small part of the 768-hectare “Plateau du Pradou et du Champ de Mars” ZNIEFF area lies in Saint-Julien-du-Gua. This part includes old mountain forests. At higher elevations, these are interspersed with meadows, heathland and scree fields.
The 761-hectare “Ligne de Crête du Rocher de la Paillière au Serre de Suson” ZNIEFF area runs along the ridgeline between the Cévennes and the Boutières, in the area of the communes of Ajoux and Saint-Julien-du-Gua. It includes open heathland with broom, heather and bilberries, Nardus grassland, and rocky outcrops. These open habitats serve as hunting or breeding grounds for diurnal birds of prey and form an important migration corridor for migratory birds in spring.
Churches, oratory and local history
The village church, which has been altered, has a late Romanesque bell-tower portal and is dedicated to Saint Julien, who was martyred in Brioude. In the 12th century, it was transferred to the Priory of Vesseaux. Three old, picturesque bridges, public washhouses and threshing floors add to Saint-Julien-du-Gua’s historic landmarks.
The Temple de La Pervenche was built in 1820 as an oratory for Protestant congregants from Ajoux, Issamoulenc and Saint-Julien-du-Gua. Original benches engraved with family names have been preserved there. In addition to its religious function, the temple is also used for cultural events, including exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check the date in advance.
