A moderately challenging circular hike, climbing routes on a limestone cliff and a small Cistercian chapel give Rompon a variety of different facets. There is also La Boissine, with its geological heritage and activities for discovering local fauna and flora. This lets you choose the focus of your trip—exercise, nature or culture—instead of cramming every experience into a single itinerary.
Hiking with views of the RhĂ´ne and DrĂ´me valleys
The “Le plateau de Rompon” route is 7.8 kilometres long and takes about two hours and 15 minutes. It is classified as a moderately challenging circular hike. The starting point is in the hamlet of Laval; the car park is beside the Church of Saint-Martin. This gives the route both a clearly defined starting point and a specific time frame. The “moderate” rating and stated duration help you assess the hike as a separate item on your itinerary.
Along the way, the route offers views of the village of Vieux Rompon, the RhĂ´ne Valley, the DrĂ´me Valley, the Vercors Massif and the Alpine range. The viewpoints take in landscapes both near and far: from the village to two valleys and mountain ranges. If you are as interested in the surroundings as in the walk itself, this route offers several different perspectives.
La Boissine: discover geological history and nature
The La Boissine departmental natural area covers 226 hectares and is an area of ecological interest. Its geological heritage illustrates the past 300 million years of the history of life on Earth. A different figure relates to a separate measure: in 2012, a 182-hectare pre-emption zone was established by agreement with La Voulte-sur-RhĂ´ne and Rompon. The two area figures represent different aspects of the site.
La Boissine also offers family activities that introduce visitors to the local fauna and flora. Examples include butterflies and lizards. This makes the site interesting for travellers who want to discover nature not just as a scenic backdrop, but through observing specific plants and animals. Geology and the experience of nature offer different perspectives: geological history spans a very long period, while the activities focus on the fauna and flora of today.
Chapel and concerts in Vieux Rompon
Chapelle du Vieux Rompon is a small Cistercian chapel on the rocky hill of Vieux Rompon. Concerts are held in the chapel, organised by the Association de l’Offrande Musicale. The first concert there took place on 26 September 1965. Its long concert history and current programme make the chapel a cultural destination with a history of its own. If you would like to include a concert in your plans, check the specific dates in advance.
Climbing and other activities
Le Chat Gourmand offers 145 climbing routes on a limestone cliff at an altitude of 400 metres. The grades range from 4a to 7b+. To get there from Rompon, take the N104 between Le Pouzin and Privas towards Vieux Rompon, continuing to the chapel. Parking is available there; the route to the chapel is seven kilometres long. Check local conditions before setting out.
Ecozootopia offers a different focus, with interactive and educational activities for children and adults, including a visit to the animal park. Together, these options provide different ideas for a stay in Rompon: a hike with a clearly stated duration, geological and natural discoveries, climbing, concerts or a visit to an animal park. Which one you choose depends on whether you would rather spend your time outdoors and active, enjoying the landscape and nature, or taking part in cultural activities.
