Les Salelles can be explored through its river landscape and walks: the Chassezac forms a loop, while several hamlets on the slopes overlook the river. Different themes take centre stage along the routes—a view across the plain and water, a Gothic church or traces of the area’s population history. This can help you decide whether the landscape, cultural history or a concert date should be the main focus of your stay.

Landscape between river and heights

Les Salelles lies in a loop of the Chassezac, which forms the southern boundary of the commune. Several hamlets lie on the slopes and overlook the river. The southern boundary and the views from the slopes thus point to the same river, but from two different perspectives. Valleys and mountains surround the commune, and well-maintained walking trails cross this landscape. On the banks of the Chassezac and at the foot of the Cévennes mountains lies the 16-hectare Ferme équestre du Foussac equestrian centre.

Walks with different highlights

The Serre de Loutre walk offers views over the Verlegas plain and the Chassezac from the hamlet of Evescat. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The walk to Croix Noire passes the 15th-century Gothic church of Saint-Sauveur des Salelles, which is open to visitors. The route is thus linked to a specific historic building, while Serre de Loutre is defined by its views over the plain and river.

A third perspective is offered by the Ressaladier walk. It leads to traces of the population growth that took place in the Ardèche Cévennes. This growth began in the 17th century and reached its peak around the middle of the 19th century. The walk therefore focuses on a longer-term development reflected in the landscape, rather than on a single viewpoint or building.

Saint-Sauveur: church and geological setting

Saint-Sauveur is a 15th-century Gothic church and the only Gothic church in its canton. It stands on Triassic sandstone formations that the Chassezac has carved into a deep loop. This brings together a building with a specific historical context and a landscape shaped by the river.

Concerts between May and September

Les Musicales aux Salelles hosts various concerts between May and September; the annual programmes vary. If a concert is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant year before planning your holiday rental search around them. This lets you plan your travel dates around a specific event date rather than relying only on the seasonal period.

On a walk, the views, a visit to the church or historical traces can set the focus. For a concert-focused trip, the specific programme dates are instead the first point of reference for your planning.
