Rivers, gorges and historic lanes offer different ways to explore Colombier-le-Vieux. In the “Vieux Colombier” quarter, stone terraced houses and former shops can be discovered on a walking tour; nearby are named cultural sites and views across the landscape. Each theme has a different focus: the old quarter unfolds through its lanes, while paths and viewpoints direct attention to nature and history. When choosing where to stay, this blend of local history, landscape and marked trails may be a deciding factor.
Rivers and gorges
The Doux and Daronne rivers run through Colombier-le-Vieux. On the approach from the Départementale 534, Pont des Etroits offers views of the Doux gorges. The Daronne gorges provide a different landscape feature: they were designated an Espace Naturel Sensible in 2015, and Colombier-le-Vieux is one of three access points. For the Doux, a viewpoint is mentioned on the approach, while the Daronne is characterized by its protected status and access to the gorges.
Along the route through the Daronne gorges, Belvédère de Saint-Sorny offers a view of their winding meanders; the gorges are then crossed via a suspension bridge. The viewpoint and crossing come one after the other and offer different perspectives: first, a view of the river’s forms, then a crossing of the gorges.
Historic lanes on foot
The “Vieux Colombier” quarter can be explored on foot. Along the way, you can discover stone terraced houses, former shops and the historic lanes Rue de la Forge, Place Saint Julien, Montée du Petit Casino and Chemin de la Molière. The former shops add a reminder of the area’s past use to its stone-built streetscape; the lane names give the historic setting a more tangible feel. This walking tour has a focus of its own, distinct from the viewpoints and nature trails.
Chapels and architectural history
At Chapelle Lecrest / Les Claustres, a marked path leads from the cemetery by the Calvaire to the chapel. The Romanesque chapel of Saint-Sorny has a different connection to the landscape: it stands in a protected natural setting within a meander of the Daronne. The two chapels thus highlight different aspects: a named path starting at the cemetery on the one hand, and Romanesque architecture and protected surroundings on the other.
The Barrage de Clauzel combines an exceptional natural setting with notable industrial and historical heritage from the 19th and 20th centuries. Landscape and industrial history are both part of the story there. The privately owned Maison Forte du Ruissas offers a different architectural focus: it is a representative example of the manor-house and rural architecture of the Vivarais. Built between 1560 and 1566, it was remodeled in the 17th century. The construction phase and later alterations can therefore be distinguished chronologically.
Plan your trip on the Train des Gorges
The tourist train Train des Gorges connects Saint-Jean-de-Muzols with Colombier-le-Vieux along a route of about 8 km; the round trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can plan this journey as a separate block of time. Seasonal operating details may vary, so it is advisable to check the timetable before your visit. Unlike the walk through Vieux Colombier, the train journey is described by two named endpoints and an approximate round-trip duration.
