Ancient archaeological finds, a theatre crossed by a stream and medieval lanes give Alba-La-Romaine a multifaceted cultural character. MuséAl and the archaeological site reveal Alba’s past; the old town and Château d’Alba take you through different periods of architecture. There are also hikes with clearly stated time requirements and two distinct wine experiences. When planning your stay, you can therefore weigh up whether you want to focus mainly on archaeology and architectural history or also set aside more time for a hike.

Archaeology: Exhibition and Excavation Site

The permanent exhibition at MuséAl displays more than 300 objects selected from the 500,000 objects recovered during excavations at Alba. It presents finds from the archaeological site and the excavations. Exhibits include an imposing statue of Emperor Trajan made of Greek marble, golden stars and a fish mosaic. The exhibition may be rearranged over time. Its objects range from monumental sculpture to decorative and figurative finds.

The archaeological site at Alba is free to access and has no closing times. You can download a free audio guide to your smartphone. This information applies to the archaeological site; check visitor information before your trip. The ancient theatre is another distinctive feature of the site: a stream runs through it.

Lanes, Church and Château d’Alba

Within the 13th-century fortifications, the medieval old town consists of a network of narrow, cobbled and vaulted lanes. Here, the focus is less on individual exhibits and more on the shape of the streets and their surroundings. Another historical landmark is Saint André Church, built between 1598 and 1699.

Château d’Alba brings together building phases from several centuries: an 11th-century keep, a château dating from the 15th to the 17th century, and a 19th-century trompe-l’œil façade. The interior contains furnished historic rooms. Visitors can see the outdoor areas, the cellar and the two furnished floors. If visiting the interior is important to your plans, check visiting arrangements before your trip.

Hikes with Different Time Requirements

The hike “Alba – from the ancient city to the Sceautres basalt neck” is 21.5 kilometres long, takes about seven hours and has a cumulative elevation gain of 596 metres. The hike “Alba – Le Serre Juliau” covers 12.5 kilometres, takes about five hours and has a cumulative elevation gain of 366 metres. The two routes therefore differ by around nine kilometres and about two hours; the difference in cumulative elevation gain is 230 metres. Comparing them can help you estimate how much time the two routes will take. Check the latest trail information before setting off.

There is also a cycling loop starting in Alba-La-Romaine: “Entre vignes et vallons Ardéchois”. This makes the town a possible starting point for a bike ride; for the hikes, by contrast, specific distances, approximate walking times and elevation gains are provided.

Wine Experiences from Different Perspectives

The tasting room at Maison Louis Latour in Alba-la-Romaine welcomes visitors year-round, offering wines from the Ardèche and a selection of Burgundy wines. Check opening arrangements before your trip. Le Caveau des Vins de l’Escoutay offers tastings of its own wines, including red, white and rosé Coteaux-de-l’Ardèche wines labelled IGP. The offerings therefore differ both in their wine selection and in the fact that the Caveau focuses on its own wines.

For trip planning, there is a choice between culture and longer activities: MuséAl, the archaeological site, the old town and Château d’Alba each offer a different focus, while the hikes can take up a significant part of the day. The selection available is a specific difference between the wine experiences; remember to check opening arrangements in advance.
