Ruffieu offers a circular trail with information panels about fountains and troughs, a forest-lined climb to Col de la Rochette, and historical traces from several eras. There is also a farmers’ and artisans’ market on Saturdays. This gives you several different ways to plan your visit: a circular route, a climb to the summit, or a stay focused on local history and the market.

Fountains and Troughs on a Circular Route

The Sentier des bacs et des fontaines is a 12.4 km circular route. You can explore it on foot or by mountain bike. Information panels highlight Ruffieu’s many troughs and fountains, giving the route a specific theme in addition to its circular format. Its distance and loop make it a full-day activity in its own right; you can choose to walk or ride a mountain bike.

Please note the restriction on the Chatelard loop of this trail: following the severe storm on July 16, 2026, it will be impassable for several months; access is strongly discouraged until further notice. Check the current status of this restriction before your trip.

Forest Climb to Col de la Rochette

The climb to Col de la Rochette starts in Ruffieu and covers 6 km, reaching an altitude of 1,113 m. It is listed as a Category 2 climb. The route passes through coniferous forest and reaches the summit beneath the fir trees. Check route conditions before setting out.

The two activities offer different experiences: the Sentier centers on its circular route and information panels, while the climb is defined by the forest, summit elevation and stated category. Choosing between them comes down to the format you prefer: a circular route themed around fountains or a climb through coniferous forest.

Historical Traces from Several Eras

The Église Saint-Didier was rebuilt in the 17th century. Ruffieu’s archaeological heritage includes numerous Gallo-Roman finds from the village center and various other locations in the commune. There are also traces of human settlement dating from the Neolithic period. The Grotte de Préoux is another part of Ruffieu’s historical heritage.

These traces span a timeline from prehistoric settlement and Gallo-Roman finds to the rebuilding of the church in the 17th century. They represent several different chapters in local history, rather than a single era. If you want to include cultural history in your travel plans, you’ll find several distinct themes to complement the natural surroundings and walking routes.

Saturday Morning Market

The Marché de producteurs et d'artisans de Ruffieu takes place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Regular vendors include a market garden, a bakery and a cheese shop. If you visit on a Saturday, you can plan the market as a morning activity in its own right. Check the market hours before you go, as they may change.

Choose Accommodation to Match Your Interests

You can shape your plans around the activities that genuinely interest you, rather than trying to fit every highlight into a single itinerary. Then compare specific accommodation options based on their location and which of these aspects matters most for your trip.
