Oppède can be discovered through a range of different themes: water-related heritage, agricultural trails, a botanical garden, the history of medieval Oppède-le-Vieux and regional olive products. This variety gives you concrete starting points for planning your trip. You can tailor your choices to whether architecture and history, plants and landscape, or olive products should take centre stage. The differences are particularly clear on the trails: each one directs your attention to a different aspect.

Trails through cultural landscapes and nature

The Sentier de l’Eau, des Fontaines et Lavoirs winds through the Oppède countryside and focuses on water-related heritage. Fountains, washhouses and a windmill illustrate the theme through different structures. If you are interested in historic traces of water use, this trail offers a clearly defined focus.

The Sentier de la Vigne turns your attention to the agricultural landscape. Olive and cherry trees, terraces and woodland shape the vineyard panoramas. Unlike the water-related trail, this one focuses not on fountains, washhouses and a windmill, but on the features of a cultivated landscape. This contrast makes it easy to choose: you can pick a trail based on your interest in heritage or agricultural landscapes.

The Sentier Botanique runs between the Oppède-le-Vieux car park and the village, passing through local and Mediterranean plant communities; it leads to the Aire de battage de Sainte-Cécile. From there, the village, castle and church overlook the ruins of the old village along the ramparts. This brings together botanical interest and views of the historic village ensemble on a single trail.

Local history and historic buildings

The medieval village of Oppède-le-Vieux developed from the 12th to the 16th century. The Collégiale Notre-Dame Dalidon is a Romanesque church dating from the 10th century, providing an earlier point of reference. Two distinct periods thus sit side by side: the village’s development over several centuries and the older Romanesque church. The Collégiale is freely accessible on foot; guided tours about its history are offered in summer. Check the dates of seasonal tours before your trip.

The historic Aire de battage d’Oppède is a platform built from calade stones in the 16th century and offers a view of Vieil Oppède. It adds a specific place to the story of the village, where historic construction and views of the old village come together.

Gardens and regional olive products

The Terrasses Sainte-Cécile form a botanical and landscaped garden. Fifteen dry-stone terraces and more than 40 tree and shrub species typical of the region shape the grounds. The terraces and plant collections offer two different ways to explore the garden; unlike the trails, the focus here is the landscaped garden itself.

La Royère – Musée de l’Huile d’Olive offers the opportunity to discover Vaucluse olive oil and other regional products made on site using organic farming methods. This adds a culinary focus to the themes of history, trails and gardens.
