La Tour-D'aigues lies on the banks of the small Eze River. Renaissance architecture and churches shape the local cultural discoveries; the faience reflects the town’s ceramic history, while Forest Sensation offers a completely different focus. You can tailor your trip to whether you are most interested in architectural history, ceramics or an activity in the forest.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Zou! bus routes 923 and 983 serve La Tour-D'aigues. The stop is called Albert Camus. Check the routes and timetables again before travelling, so your arrival plans are based on current services. Then compare the specific accommodation details with your own travel plans.

Renaissance Traces at the Château

The Château de La Tour d’Aigues is a Renaissance building. After the fires of 1780 and 1792, ruins, façades and renovated cellars remain. The site thus presents different states of the building side by side: surviving parts and restored rooms, as well as traces of the fires. Information panels in the courtyard help you place the buildings within their historical periods.

The restored rooms display a partly preserved French Renaissance floor and white and decorated faience. These pieces come from the workshop of Baron Jean-Baptiste Jérôme de Bruny. The flooring and ceramics offer different insights into the furnishings and craftsmanship of the period. Together with the courtyard panels, they provide an introduction to the history of the Château that is not based on a single date alone.

Churches and a Chapel: Different Historical Layers

The Eglise Notre Dame de Romégas is first mentioned in a papal bull dating from 1096. The oldest surviving parts probably date from the 13th century: the nave, the apse and the first chapel to the right of the choir. The early reference and the probable dating of these building elements therefore mark two different historical points of reference. The sculpture group “Mise au tombeau du Christ” is also in the first chapel to the right of the choir.

Another historic stop is the Chapelle Saint Christophe. Jacques Jehan built it in 1558 on the orders of Jean Louis Nicolas de Bouliers. The chapel’s establishment was accompanied by the creation of a local brotherhood and an annual pilgrimage tradition. Contact the local parish priest to arrange a visit; check the contact options again before your trip. This allows you to plan a visit without assuming that there are regular opening hours.

Faience and Traces of Pottery-making

The Musée des Faïences preserves ceramics dating from the Renaissance to the Revolution, recovered during archaeological excavations at the Château de La Tour d’Aigues. The collection comprises more than 2,000 catalogued pieces; this number may change as the inventory is updated. The museum is currently closed. Before planning a visit, check whether access is possible rather than assuming the collection will be open.

Rue d’Eole also points to the local history of ceramics: it is in the old village, on the site of the former street of pottery workshops. The collections and historic street name thus complement the insights into faience and pottery-making, although they do not offer the same kind of visitor experience.

A Different Activity in a Natural Setting

Forest Sensation is a treetop adventure park within the commune of La Tour-D'aigues. It is located in a two-hectare wooded natural area between vineyards and forests. This offers an activity in nature alongside architecture and ceramics. Check the operating details before visiting, as they may change.

Bus routes 923 and 983 provide a specific option for travelling by bus; current timetables and the relevant access conditions remain important when planning your visit.
