Discover Châteauneuf-du-Pape through its winegrowing, cultural sites and trails with nature and Rhône themes. When planning a stay, you can first decide which focus interests you most: learning about grape varieties and terroir, exploring wine tools and winemaking, or taking walks with different themes. The offerings also vary in the trail lengths, estimated times and information provided on the signs.

Comparing wine trails and walks

The Sentier viticole runs through the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It offers information about terroirs, grape varieties and growing methods, as well as the characteristics of the wine-growing region and winemaking. Marked routes, open to the public, are listed at 2.8, 3.4, 4.8 and 7 kilometres; around 15 information signs accompany them. The different trail lengths provide a practical guide when choosing the distance of a walk.

The Sentiers découverte & biodiversité have a different thematic focus. They consist of two walking loops with a total of 24 information signs about the appellation and biodiversity. These loops therefore focus on two themes, while the Sentier viticole provides information about winegrowing, including terroir, grape varieties, growing methods and winemaking.

The Circuit découverte de l’AOC is a 5.4-kilometre walking loop. An approximate duration of 1.5 to 2.5 hours is given, and there is also a picnic area. If the time available is important to your plans, this estimated walking time offers an additional point of reference. By contrast, several trail lengths are listed for the Sentier viticole routes. This lets you compare the different trails using the time and distance information actually provided.

Tastings and wine museums

La Vinothèque offers guided tastings of five wines from different wineries. Grape varieties and terroir are explained during the tastings. Since booking and seasonal conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your planned visit. La Vinothèque also includes a museum about the history and expertise of winegrowing. It displays a collection of tastevins, which La Vinothèque describes as the largest in the world. The focus there is therefore on both sharing winegrowing knowledge and the tastevins.

The Musée du Vin Brotte displays rare winegrowing tools, including items from the 14th century. Two areas present activities involved in winegrowing and winemaking; topics include growing methods, winemaking and serving suggestions. The museum also has its own tasting cellar. Compared with the guided tasting at La Vinothèque, the focus here also extends to tools and the different areas of work involved in winegrowing and winemaking.

Building and local history

The buildings also offer concrete points of reference for different periods. The Château des Papes was built on the orders of Pope John XXII between 1317 and 1333. The Chapelle Saint Théodorit is an 11th-century Romanesque chapel; its 12th-century frescoes of the Apostles are influenced by Byzantine art. The chapel has been listed as a historic monument since 28 December 1984.

The Grande Fontaine was first mentioned in a document in 1635 and remains a historic meeting place in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The dates refer to different aspects: the construction period is given for the château, the dates of origin of the chapel and frescoes for the chapel, and the year of its first documentary mention for the Fontaine. This distinction helps put the historical information into context without equating the Fontaine’s first mention with its construction date.

Natural surroundings and travel

Islon Saint-Luc is designated as a Natura 2000 site. A heritage discovery trail about the Rhône, with information signs, introduces visitors to the ecological and cultural value of this natural area. In terms of subject matter, it complements the focus on the wine-growing region and biodiversity with the heritage of the Rhône. If you are taking different interests into account when planning your trip, you can weigh up wine knowledge, cultural history and nature themes.
