Montmeyan combines a compact, fortified village with a striking position above the plain. The village sits on a rocky spur, overlooking a narrow plain edged by wooded plateaus. The Basses Gorges du Verdon and Lac de Quinson are nearby. A spur is a projecting section of land. In Montmeyan, the village sits on this elevated projection; below it stretches the narrow plain, edged by wooded plateaus. This change in elevation shapes the village’s appearance.

Fortifications and Building History

The village lies within its defensive walls. The parish church of Notre-Dame is of Romanesque origin and was built in the 12th century. The ruins of the former feudal castle stand on the heights; the clock tower is crowned by a campanile. The Tour Charlemagne has a gateway in the fortifications and numerous architectural features dating from the 12th century. Notre-Dame is notable for its Romanesque origins and 12th-century construction; at the Tour Charlemagne, a fortified gateway and features from the same century define its architectural character. The Tour de la Roquette, a remnant of a former commandery, lies a few kilometres from the village centre and forms a distinct landmark set apart from it.

Activities at Montmeyan Plage

At Montmeyan Plage in the Basses Gorges du Verdon, canoes, pedal boats, stand-up paddleboards and electric boats are available. These options differ in how you get around: you can paddle, pedal, stand on a board or use an electric boat. If you are planning time on the water, this distinction can help you choose the type of activity.

Hiking: Destination or Loop

The Sentier du Garde Canal is an easy hike covering 10.5 kilometres and taking 3 hours and 45 minutes. It passes through the Basses Gorges du Verdon to the Sainte-Maxime chapel; the stated starting point is in Quinson. The Le Pierrier du lac loop follows a different route: it passes through natural landscapes along varied trails and offers views of the lake at Montmeyan. The Sentier leads to a named destination, while Le Pierrier du lac is a loop. Trail conditions and rules for forest access on this loop may vary by season. Check these conditions before your visit.
