Les Claux is the centre of the Vars ski area, situated at the foot of the Eyssina rock face. The village stretches along the D902 towards the Col de Vars; several starting points for skiing are located in Les Claux. The Caribou toboggan run is located in the heart of the ski area. It is 1,027 metres long and has a vertical drop of 123 metres. For a different kind of tour, there is the “La Trace de Sibières” ski touring route: it starts in Vars les Claux, is rated difficult and covers 2.2 kilometres with an elevation gain of 325 metres. Weather and avalanche conditions may affect its availability; check conditions before setting out. Les Claux thus offers a toboggan run with a clearly specified length as well as a challenging ski tour as distinct activities.
Orienteering and trails
Orienteering in Vars les Claux includes five courses of varying difficulty. Three easy courses start at the top of the Télémix de Chabrières. Two courses for experienced participants start at the top of the La Mayt chairlift. As seasonal lift access may change, check current access options before planning your day around them. The courses differ both in their starting points and their profiles.
Hiking and snowshoe trails start at the snow fronts in Les Claux, including routes towards the Col de Vars. The “Sentier des heureux” hiking trail leads from the top of the La Mayt chairlift towards Vars les Claux. For a different perspective on Vars, the “Le sentier de la reine” interpretation trail uses information panels to present the area’s history, geology and pastoralism. You can return to Vars les Claux on foot via the Col de Vars route. Alongside trails for exercise, the focus is also on themes that explain the village and its landscape.
Mountain biking and practical information
Mountain bike routes also start in Les Claux. “All around Vars” starts there; the technical “Lumberjack” route also begins in Vars les Claux and is intended for experienced riders. This specifies the experience level required for Lumberjack, while “All around Vars” is mentioned as another route starting there. When choosing between activities, you can make the type of outing—ski touring, orienteering, mountain biking or an interpretive trail—the starting point for your plans, rather than treating all trails as similar hikes.
The Vars les Claux Tourist Office is a reception and information centre for visitors at an altitude of 1,850 metres. The municipality of Vars also provides a free shuttle bus service for travel within and between the villages of Vars.
