The Batterie, also known as the ouvrage Est du Mont Caume, stands at an elevation of 765 to 778 metres and is the highest 19th-century structure in Toulon’s land defences. Le Revest-Les-Eaux offers a range of themes, from military history, sacred art and the performing arts to landscapes.

Architecture and Sacred History

The Batterie, also known as the ouvrage Est du Mont Caume, is located on Mont Caume in Le Revest-Les-Eaux. Its construction campaign dates to 1889. Its elevation and construction date offer two distinct points of reference: the elevation describes its location, while 1889 marks the construction campaign.

Église Saint-Christophe was consecrated in 1679 and is under the joint protection of Saint James the Greater and Saint Christopher. The church houses furnishings and paintings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Its consecration and furnishings from several centuries are distinct historical points of reference.

Vieille Valette, also known as Tourris, is a different kind of historic site: the oppidum and fortified medieval settlement comprise a castle, a church and a village. Here, the focus is on several elements of a settlement, rather than a single building. By comparison, the Batterie’s history is tied to a clearly defined structure in Toulon’s land defences, while Église Saint-Christophe tells a story of sacred history through its consecration, patron saints and furnishings.

Sacred Art and the Performing Arts

The Musée d'Art Sacré displays objects of the Roman Catholic faith on one of its western floors, most of them from France and Italy. The eastern floor features objects from the Orthodox tradition, particularly from Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece and Russia. Comparing the floors reveals the different traditions and countries of origin represented in the collections. Visits to the Musée d'Art Sacré are available on request.

The performing arts are represented by Le PÔLE, a venue at the Maison des Comoni recognised as a “Scène conventionnée d’intérêt national – Art en territoire”. Its multidisciplinary programme includes circus, theatre, dance and film-concerts. Other types of performances on offer include music, street arts, puppetry and object theatre. A cultural stay centred on a programme of performances is therefore quite different from one focused mainly on church art, collection pieces or historic buildings.

Landscapes of Mont Caume and Lac du Revest

The 78-hectare Domaine de La Ripelle is a natural area with coniferous forests, agricultural terraces known as restanques, and an olive grove. Forests, terraces and olive trees each contribute a different aspect to this shaped landscape.

At Lac du Revest, the wooded shore is a starting point for walks in the surrounding hills. The lake is also a place for fishing. Lac du Revest therefore brings together two different nature experiences: trails into the hills and the opportunity to fish by the lake.

The landscape in the ZNIEFF area of Mont Caume includes cliffs, vast scree slopes and rocks shaped by water and wind. The type 2 ZNIEFF “Mont Caume” is located in the commune of Le Revest-Les-Eaux. In the INPN edition dated 12 June 2025, 28 animal species of particular conservation interest are listed there, including eight key species. From the Tour sarrasine, there are 360-degree views of Toulon, the sea, Mont Faron, Mont Caume, and the dam and its lake. Mont Caume therefore offers both striking rock formations and a range of recorded species, as well as expansive views of named landscape features.
