Visitors to La Roquebrussanne can choose between village history, distinctive limestone landscapes and hikes of varying lengths. There is a one-hour stroll and a moderately difficult three-and-a-half-hour circular hike. Protected nature, religious buildings and other ways to spend your days round out the options.

Hiking Options for Different Time Budgets

The “À la découverte du village provençal” route is an easy 2.6 km stroll that takes one hour. It is the shorter option. “Des Molières vers les Orris” takes considerably longer: this moderately difficult circular hike is 10.1 km long and is listed as taking 3.5 hours. So the choice is not just between two routes, but also between a short stroll and a longer hike.

The “Des Molières vers les Orris” route passes through pine forests, holm oak forests and ruiniform limestone formations. The Source des Orris is a protected site and an LPO nature reserve, suitable for walks and birdwatching. The site was once used for grazing and farming. Its features include an old rock shelter, a basin, a gravity-fed irrigation system and a small cave in the tufa rock.

Geological formations and views also shape the area's natural attractions. The Grand Laoucien is a natural sinkhole about 130 metres in diameter and 43 metres deep. From Notre-Dame d’Inspiration, panoramic views extend across the Issole plain and the Plateau d’Agnis.

Buildings and Village History

The Tour de l’horloge is a protected historic monument dating from 1616. Its exceptional bell-tower crown is particularly striking. An older landmark in the village's history is the fortified manor house, known locally as the “castle”: the prior of La Celle Abbey acquired it in 1335.

The story behind the decision to build the Église de la Transfiguration is notable: in 1340, at the request of the residents, the Archbishop of Aix decided that the church should be built. The Chapelle Saint-Louis was built in 1691. It houses a bell cast in 1694 and decorated with a cross, as well as a wooden statue of Saint Louis dating from the 17th to 18th century. The buildings thus reveal different stages of the village's history without reducing it to a single period.

The network of wayside shrines also tells the story of religious routes: eight stations lead to the Chapelle Notre-Dame d’Inspiration, three to the Chapelle Saint-Louis and one to the presumed Chapelle Sainte-Madeleine. The stations are part of processional routes. The identification of Sainte-Madeleine remains explicitly tentative.

More Activities and Practical Information

Those looking for activities beyond hiking and culture will find a range of options. Wine and spirits tastings are offered at Domaine Baussanne. Visitors can tour the wine cellar and press house, and explore the estate's landscapes on hikes. The Pumptrack de La Roquebrussanne has a riding area of about 600 m². Its surroundings are partly peri-urban and partly landscaped, making them suitable for relaxation and leisure activities.

The Ponts de la Latte comprise six bridges spanning the river as far as the former olive mill site. Some bridges are open to the public, while others remain private; check access locally. For travel, the Croisement de Néoules stop is a useful landmark: it is served by ZOU! route 4802 between Saint-Maximin and Toulon. Check the timetable before travelling. The different walking times can also help you plan your day: you can focus on a short village stroll or take the longer circular hike.
