Callian is a Village de Caractère set on a hill. Flower-decked lanes wind around the Château; a moss-covered cascade lies in the central square. This interplay of lanes, château and cascade shapes the village’s appearance. Those who want to discover Callian for its culture and character will find several facets of the same place here: historic buildings, places of religious remembrance and viewpoints.

Lanes and architectural history

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Roses dates from the 10th century. It stands on a former Gallo-Roman settlement site and is the oldest building in Callian. The Chapelle des Pénitents offers a different historical perspective: the restored former Romanesque castle chapel dates from the 12th century and now hosts exhibitions and concerts. Its former role as a castle chapel and its present-day cultural use tell different chapters of its history.

The Circuit patrimoine de Callian connects the medieval Château, the spiral lanes, the Chapelle des Pénitents, the Lavoir Saint-Roch, La Cascade and the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church. As a self-guided heritage route, it brings together these named stops. Those interested in architectural history can distinguish the features of each place, rather than treating them as a single attraction.

The Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church was built in 1685. Its stated features include a bell tower with glazed tiles, restored 19th-century stained-glass windows, altarpieces and religious artworks. The Cippe romain offers a different focus: the small Roman grave stele bears an inscription documenting the influential Coelius family. The church and the stele thus point to different ways in which Callian’s history can be seen: through architecture and art on the one hand, and through an inscription on the other.

Places of remembrance and views

The Chapelle Saint-Donat is a place of pilgrimage and worship with votive offerings. Festive events and pilgrimages have been documented there since 1517. These include the recurring FĂŞte de la Saint-Donat, held on the first weekend in August. As the exact programme may change, it is advisable to check the dates before visiting.

From Callian’s Esplanade, there are views of Montauroux, the Tanneron and Estérel massifs, and the beginning of the Massif des Maures. The terraced Cimetière de Callian overlooks the Siagne plain and offers wide views of the Esterel Massif. The two places offer different perspectives: from the Esplanade, views of named places and massifs; from the cemetery, views of the plain and massif.

The graves of Christian Dior (1905–1957) and Catherine Dior (1917–2008) are in the Cimetière de Callian. Catherine Dior became a producer of fragrant flowers in Callian. The cemetery thus combines a viewpoint with a specific biographical connection to the municipality. Those interested in this side of Callian will find here not only views of the landscape but also the memory of two well-known individuals.
