Belgentier combines local history with the landscapes of the Gapeau: Louis XIV stayed here, and the river flows through the town. Other highlights include a listed church, Château Peiresc and Parc Peiresc, as well as nature and trails in the surrounding area. For planning purposes, the attractions can be grouped into local heritage, a marked circular route with a stated duration, and a landscape area that extends beyond Belgentier.

Local History and Heritage

On 20 February 1660, Louis XIV stayed in Belgentier during his pilgrimage to Cotignac. He spent the night at Château Peiresc and attended Mass the following morning, 21 February. The château is a 17th-century residence and is listed as a Monument Historique. It once housed a cabinet of curiosities reflecting the artistic and literary tastes of the scholar and humanist Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc.

The façade of Château Peiresc can be seen from Rue Peiresc; the garden and interior are open to visitors only during Heritage Days. If you would like to see these areas, plan your visit for those days and check the dates in advance.

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is another historic landmark in the town. The 17th-century church has a Renaissance dome and historic furnishings, and is listed in the Monuments Historiques register. On its west façade, a fresco created by Michel Deguil in 1992 depicts Louis XIV and his entourage during their stay in Belgentier. The mural thus revisits the same historic stay associated with Château Peiresc.

The Maison du Patrimoine presents a permanent exhibition of objects, tools and photographs illustrating Belgentier’s past. The exhibition may be updated. Along with the church and château, it offers another way to explore local history—this time through everyday objects and images rather than architecture.

The Gapeau, the Park and Fishing

The Gapeau flows through Belgentier. By the river lies Parc Peiresc, a 2.5-hectare site recognised as an Espace Naturel Sensible. The park combines a protected natural area with several designated facilities and activities.

Facilities in the park include fitness equipment, children’s play areas and a pétanque court; there is also access for anglers. As facilities may change, check what is currently available if you plan to use a particular one.

Near Parc Peiresc, in the centre of Belgentier, there is a no-kill trout-fishing stretch regularly used by keen anglers. It belongs to the first fishing category. Seasonal access and rules may change, so check the current conditions before setting out.

Circular Route and the Surrounding Landscape

The Circuit des Aiguilles de Valbelle is a marked 10-kilometre circular route with orange waymarking. The stated duration is 240 minutes, or four hours. You can use the route for mountain biking or horseback riding. Seasonal access restrictions may apply in the forest; check the conditions before your outing.

The Aiguilles de Valbelle themselves are natural monuments formed over thousands of years by erosion of the plateau’s dolomitic rock. This is a different aspect of the landscape from the trails and their uses: the focus here is on how the rock formations came to be.

The larger landscape of the Plateau de Siou Blanc extends across four municipalities, including Belgentier and Solliès-Toucas. Marked trails wind through pine forests, rocky terrain, garrigue and wooded areas. This regional setting reaches beyond the town itself and complements its local and riverside landscapes with other natural features and trails.

A Local Olive Tradition

Table olives are also part of local history: since 1930, the La Belgentiéroise olive-growing cooperative has been known for them in the region. Its products include the Belgentiéroise olive, named after the cooperative. Alongside heritage and landscape, this adds a culinary dimension to the description of the town, without implying that it is a visitor attraction.
