Montgenevre offers a wide range of activities for your stay: ski slopes, mountain biking trails, hikes and historic structures. The trails and attractions each have their own appeal—from winter sports to geological features and fortifications.

Winter Sports, Bike Park and Luge

The Domaine Skiable de Montgenèvre offers 95 km of ski slopes across 78 runs. These figures may change as future development work is carried out.

The Montgenèvre Bike Park extends from an altitude of 2,450 m to 1,860 m. Its facilities include eight permanent downhill trails, three play areas and two freeride areas. The offer is complemented by eleven mountain bike routes, four enduro routes, eleven downhill routes, a beginner area, a pump track and a Big Air Bag. The number of trails and facilities may change as a result of future work.

The Monty Express luge starts at the Chalvet gondola lift. Its 1,400 m-long track descends 300 m and passes through fir trees, over bridges and through tunnels. It operates seasonally, and availability may vary; check when the luge is open before planning your visit.

Hiking Among Forests and Geological Features

There are loop hikes of varying lengths to choose from when planning a walk. The Sentier Géologique du Chenaillet is 14 km long; its highest point is at 2,650 m, with an elevation gain of 905 m. La transfrontalière covers 6 km, takes about two hours and has an elevation gain of 200 m. It passes through the forest from Montgenevre to the Italian village of Clavière. It is worth checking the latest route information before setting out.

The Sentier Géologique du Chenaillet reveals oceanic rocks more than 155 million years old. At Collet vert, a wooden platform offers a close-up view of an impressive collection of pillow lavas. These geological features give the loop hike a distinctive appeal alongside its route details.

The hike to the sources of the Durance also has a distinctive landscape. Two paths lead to the sources; one follows the Durance through the forest to marshy meadows. The river rises there at an altitude of about 2,200 m. Parking, public toilets and a picnic area are available for hikers.

Forts and History

The Fort Chaberton complex towers above Montgenevre. Including its access path to the summit, it has been listed as a historic monument in France since 4 February 2021. Fort du Janus offers a different perspective on the past: it was built between 1886 and 1903 on the 2,529 m-high summit of Janus.

Fort du Janus also includes a 900 m-long underground extension, added between 1931 and 1937 to extend the Maginot Line. In the PACA region, the fort has been awarded the “Patrimoine du XXème siècle” label. Its construction, extension and designation are distinct aspects of its history.

Guided tours of the Barrage Rapide are organized in Montgenevre. If you are planning a visit, confirm the date in advance. During the Second World War, the former military structure was intended to prevent enemy troops from advancing toward Briançon.
