Freissinières stretches along the Biaysse as a 20-kilometre-long hanging valley. The commune includes 13 hamlets with historic buildings, as well as churches, temples and old mills. Anyone looking for accommodation here will find a place where nature trails and a rich cultural heritage can be explored as distinct highlights.

Hiking, from short circular walks to lake trails

Two very different options are available for comparing hikes. RANDOLAND Freissinières is a very easy 1.9-kilometre circular walk. It starts and ends at Place du Souvenir in Ville. At 13.1 kilometres, taking six hours and graded “difficult,” the Circuit des lacs is considerably more demanding and longer.

The landscape along the Circuit des lacs also brings the difference into focus: the trail passes through larch forests and alpine pastures, over rock slabs and to two lakes in wild cirques. Lac Palluel and Lac Faravel are linked by a balcony trail above the valley. The route lies in the heart of the Écrins National Park. This puts a short, very easy loop alongside a long, difficult hike with lakes as its destination, without suggesting that both take the same amount of time or require the same level of effort.

Mills, temples and local history

The Moulin des Ribes was built by the village lord in 1620 and remained in operation until 1945. It was used to produce flour and walnut oil. As the valley’s ecomuseum, it is considered a typical example of an alpine way of life. Its history connects a specific year of construction and former uses with the role of mills in Freissinières’ cultural heritage.

The religious buildings also tell different stories. The Eglise Sainte-Marie-Madeleine has a strikingly simple exterior, with four smooth white walls, a roof and a small bell gable. It may have been the former Temple de Ville, whose existence is documented in the 17th century. A Huguenot cross stands above the entrance to the Temple des Viollins. The Geneva pastor Félix Neff consecrated it there in 1824.

Winter trails and climbing

When snow conditions are suitable, the Domaine nordique de Freissinières has around 15 kilometres of trails for skating and cross-country skiing. To get there, take the D38 from the N94 between Gap and Briançon, then continue along the D38b towards Freissinières. Chalet Nordique, opposite the town hall, is the recommended parking area. Before your visit, check for seasonal changes to road and parking information.

The Tour de glace de Freissinières offers a different kind of climbing: this artificial ice-climbing facility has seven ice walls and a dry-tooling area. The Via ferrata de Freissinières is a sporty route, consisting mainly of traverses along a sunny, south-facing limestone wall above the valley. It dates from 1988 and was the first via ferrata in France. Freissinières therefore offers a choice of distinct climbing experiences: an artificial facility for ice climbing and dry tooling, and a via ferrata with historical significance.

Plants and tastings

At an altitude of 1,100 metres, Le jardin des Elixirs d'Isabelle cultivates aromatic, medicinal and digestive plants. The garden can be visited independently or with a guide. For adults, guided visits followed by a tasting take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cost 12 euros. These specific details make the visit an activity in its own right, alongside hiking, heritage and climbing.
