The hike to Cascade de la Pisse, whitewater on the Durance and climbing at Roche Rousse offer different ways to spend time in Châteauroux-Les-Alpes. Families can also take a guided water hike in Canyon du Couleau from the age of seven; the Church of Saint-Marcellin dates from the 16th century.
Hikes with different destinations
The hike to Cascade de la Pisse is considered the best-known hike in Châteauroux-Les-Alpes. It is rated moderate and takes three hours. The waterfall plunges more than 40 metres. The stated duration helps you gauge the length of the hiking day; trail conditions can vary by season. Check them before setting out.
The Chemin de la Durance passes over the Plateau d’Herbonne, also known as Roc glaciaire, and by the Chapelle Saint-Jacques and the Durance. The starting point and finish are at the former SNCF railway station in Châteauroux-Les-Alpes. The hike to Belvédère de Roche Rousse offers views of Châteauroux and the Durance and Rabioux valleys. It starts and ends at the car park for the Roche Rousse climbing area. The two hikes offer different highlights: the Chemin passes over the Plateau d’Herbonne and by the Chapelle Saint-Jacques and the Durance; the hike to Belvédère de Roche Rousse offers views of the valleys.
The Durance and whitewater
The Vague du Rabioux forms where the Rabioux torrent meets the Durance. On the Durance, it is one of the largest launch bases for rafting, hydrospeed and other whitewater sports. River conditions vary by season. Châteauroux-Les-Alpes also has an easily accessible entry point on the Durance, with a ramp leading to the launch area; the Eau Vive Passion activity centre is located by the river. Check operating conditions according to the season.
Climbing and water hiking
Roche Rousse is a climbing area classified as “terrain d’aventure” (adventure terrain). The climbing routes are 15 to 35 metres high; their characteristics may change over time. The site is also used for bird nesting, so access may be regulated seasonally. Check seasonal access conditions before visiting.
In Canyon du Couleau, children aged seven and over and families can take a guided water hike with professional supervision. Activities include water games, cave exploration, jumps and natural slides. July to August is the optimal period; conditions and regulations may vary by season. This distinction is useful for planning by season: July to August is considered optimal for the water hike, while conditions on the Durance vary by season.
