Chabottes stretches across the valley floor of the Drac and the adjoining slopes. Alongside this landscape, cultural heritage from several centuries shapes the area; a walk and various excursions offer further highlights. You can tailor your stay to nature, local history, or activity.
Landscape and Nature
The braided bed of the Drac is fringed by riparian woodland. A lateral moraine left by the former Drac Glacier is now mostly forested. This means the landscape encompasses both a river environment and landforms shaped by glaciers. For habitats in Chabottes less affected by development and intensive agriculture, the Parc national des Écrins nature profile lists 300 plant species, more than 120 bird species, and 30 mammal species. These figures complement the picture of the river and moraine with the local flora and fauna.
Churches and Architectural History
The two parish churches can be clearly compared by period: the parish church of the Nativité in Les Estèves, in La Basse-Plaine, was built between 1853 and 1855; the parish church of the Assomption in Chabottes Village was built between 1864 and 1884. Both periods fall within the 19th century, but refer to different churches. The Chapelle de la Nativité de la Vierge has an older, multi-stage construction history. Its original 18th-century section comprises the choir and sacristy; the nave was added in the 19th or early 20th century. The nave is the main part of the church, the choir is the altar area, and the sacristy is an ancillary room. This makes the distinction between the chapel’s original section and later addition clear through specific architectural elements. The monumental Calvary dates from 1934. The Aqueduc des Gorges above the Pont de Frappe has been renovated.
Walks and Excursions
The La Plaine de Chabottes route climbs gently to the covered Canal de Gap and offers a flat, peaceful walk in the shade. The type of activity is a clear point of distinction when choosing what to do: here, walking takes center stage, while Trot'in'Champsaur offers guided rides on electric scooters along themed routes. The operator’s base is located at 05260 Chabottes. The offer is aimed at families, sports enthusiasts, and groups aged 12 and over; reservations are required.
Ti'Fred Rando offers nature excursions in three formats: découverte, immersion, and évasion. The excursions are intended for groups or available on request. The conditions therefore differ in specific ways: Trot'in'Champsaur requires a reservation and is aimed at groups aged 12 and over; Ti'Fred Rando is intended for groups or is available on request. This comparison can help you choose between a walk, an electric scooter tour, and a nature excursion.
