The Vauban fortifications of Briançon have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008. The city walls stretch for almost three kilometres and are freely accessible year-round. When planning your visit, it is important to distinguish them from Fort des Salettes: access to the fort is regulated and only possible as part of a guided tour. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

Vauban Heritage and Forts

Fort du Château was transformed from an old castle into a genuine fort in the 19th century. It can be visited as part of a guided discovery tour with Briançon’s cultural heritage guides; schedules and booking arrangements may vary. The visit offers panoramic views of the Briançonnais valleys, the forts included on the World Heritage List, and the city. Magasin à poudre du Château can also be visited: this well-preserved powder magazine was built between 1692 and 1700.

The Chemin de ronde offers impressive panoramic views.

Church and City History

The former Collégiale Notre-Dame is now the parish church of Notre-Dame and Saint-Nicolas. It was built from 1705 to 1718 to Vauban’s plans. A decree dated 14 October 1931 designated it a historic monument. The construction period, present-day function, and designation tell different chapters in the history of this building: the church was built in the early 18th century, while its recognition as a monument came later.

Routes and Getting There

Route “53 - Le Tour des Forts de Briançon” loops around Briançon, passing near numerous Vauban forts. The Via Guisane runs between Briançon and Chantemerle through the forest, along canals, and beside the Guisane River. To choose between the two routes, you can consider their stated highlights: proximity to Vauban forts on one, and forest, canals, and river on the other.

By road, Briançon can be reached via the N94 from Italy or Gap, via the A51 from Marseille, and via the D1091 from Grenoble. The route that suits your journey depends on your direction of travel. Check road conditions before setting off.

Art and Nature Information

The Centre d'Art Contemporain plans two group exhibitions each year: one in summer and one in winter, each lasting about three months. The themes of the individual exhibitions vary. If contemporary art is part of your travel plans, check the specific exhibition dates. This makes it possible to take the programme’s seasonal schedule into account when planning your visit, without treating the summer and winter exhibitions as the same offering.

The Maison du Parc national des Ecrins - Briançonnais provides visitors with free documents, maps, and hiking guides. Those interested in nature and routes will find various types of navigation material there, from maps to hiking guides. This resource complements the cultural attractions with a nature-focused point of interest.
