Visitors to Aspres-sur-Buëch can explore the village’s history on a medieval village walk: the village is laid out in a spiral around a hill crowned by the Tour de l'Horloge. There are also walks along the Buëch, a route with views of the Dévoluy and, in the distance, the Vercors, as well as other local activities. You can tailor your stay to your interests, choosing between village history, landscapes and special activities.
Village history in the streetscape
On La Grande Rue, old façades preserve blocked-up pointed-arch arcades, which hint at former stables and shops. Several covered passages, built over by houses, lead to homes at the foot of the hill with the clock tower. The medieval village walk reveals different features of the village: its lanes, façades and distinctive layout around the hill.
The Église Saint-Géraud is a Romanesque parish church first mentioned in 1516. Its nave is vaulted with Gothic pointed arches. The church is close to the houses and has no forecourt. Individual visitors can explore it free of charge and without a guide; opening hours are seasonal, so check the visitor information for your planned visit.
The walk also includes a château built in the 15th century by a prior from the Révillasc family. It is now privately owned. The Tour Horloge is the municipality’s war memorial, erected in 1921.
Walks through varied landscapes
The red Route N°4, La boucle de Saint-Apôtre, starts at the car park in front of the Aspres-sur-Buëch tourist office. The loop offers views of the Dévoluy and, in the distance, the Vercors. The walking trail Les bords du Buëch also starts at this car park. It follows small paths alongside the Buëch, next to irrigation channels, as far as former ice houses.
The two walks differ mainly in what they focus on along the way: the Saint-Apôtre loop offers the named distant views, while Les bords du Buëch follows the river and the channels to the former ice houses. These landscape features can help you choose the walk that best suits your interests. A guide to the village walk, in French and English, is available from the Sources du Buëch tourist office.
Flying, fishing and other activities
At Aérodrome du Chevalet Aspres sur Buëch, you can try gliding, powered flying, hang-gliding and two-seat microlights, paragliding, hang-gliding and model aircraft flying. The Association Aéronautique d'Aspres sur Buëch offers introductory sessions and training courses in gliding and microlights. If you are planning a specific activity, check the arrangements in advance, as they may change.
Fishing is also part of local life: the La Truite du Buëch association manages private fishing waters in Aspres-sur-Buëch. Parc des Séquoias has an area for young children, with a swing, several spring riders and benches for accompanying adults. Another way to learn about the surroundings is to follow the Serre-Gras discovery trail, where five themed panels explain the ecosystem.
Market and regional products
The weekly market is held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Rue de la République. If the market is important to your plans, check the dates and times before you travel. Flore Alpes sells organic products made from sea buckthorn and birch directly to customers. These include wellness, cosmetic and food products made from sea buckthorn berries and sea buckthorn oil, as well as birch sap and xylitol. The range available may change; if you are interested, check what is currently on offer in advance.
Planning your visit and getting there
The medieval village walk is less than 500 metres from an SNCF railway station. If travelling by train is an option for you, check connections for your travel date. Seasonal opening hours apply to church visits; you should also check details for planned flying activities and the weekly market in advance if needed. This helps you plan your village visit, walk and other activities around the dates and times actually available.
