Vauvenargues combines a starting point for the hike to the Prieuré Sainte-Victoire with historic buildings in the village. An astronomical observatory and seasonal lavandin fields are also among the sights to discover. These varied attractions offer different ways to shape your stay: hike to the Croix de Provence, explore the village’s history or take an outing around the lavandin fields.

Plan your hike to the Prieuré

The hike to the Prieuré Sainte-Victoire and the Croix de Provence starts at the Cabassols car park in Vauvenargues. The route covers 12 kilometres and 600 metres of elevation gain; the stated duration is four hours. It can therefore be planned as a substantial activity in its own right. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as access may change seasonally.

The route from Vauvenargues to the Prieuré follows a pilgrimage tradition dating back to the 15th century. The Prieuré itself dates to 1661/74. The tradition of the route and the date of the building thus represent two distinct historical reference points. The chapel and refuge are managed by Les Amis de Sainte-Victoire. The Prieuré and the refuge are open to everyone, although occasional closures are possible. The refuge has 14 sleeping places. Check the visiting conditions and confirm access before setting out on the hike.

Church and château: local history in the village

The Église Saint-Sidoine also reflects several periods: its Romanesque section dates from the 10th century. In the 16th century, the church was dedicated jointly to Saint Étienne and Sainte Victoire and expanded with six side chapels. The Château de Vauvenargues was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 15 January 1929.

The Maison du Grand Site is in the village, near the church. If you would like to stop by, check the opening hours and facilities in advance, as both may change. The church, château and Maison du Grand Site are separate points of interest; the historical information about the château and church does not in itself indicate current visiting conditions.

Public evenings at the observatory

The Observatoire de Vauvenargues has a 355-millimetre Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, as well as other instruments for visual observation. Monthly public evenings starting at 8 pm include slide presentations, identifying stars and constellations with a laser, and astronomical mythology. Specific dates and schedules may change. Check the event details and current visitor access and facilities in advance.

Lavandin and visits to the distillery

The flowering lavandin fields at Distillerie Sainte-Victoire can be reached during the first half of July via a 1.5-hour walk in the Vallon du Délubre. The fields are therefore a seasonal reason to visit; check the flowering period and access in advance. This lets you plan around the bloom rather than choose an arbitrary date.

Visitors and groups are welcome at the Distillerie Sainte-Victoire farm in Vauvenargues. An introduction to its activities is offered, depending on visitors’ expectations. Agree on the arrangements for your visit in advance. The walk to the fields and a visit to the farm are two different ways to discover the distillery and its surroundings.

Travel dates and directions

The activities have different schedules to bear in mind when choosing your dates: the lavandin fields bloom in the first half of July, while the observatory’s public evenings are held monthly from 8 pm. The four-hour hike, by contrast, is mainly a consideration for planning your day. From Aix-en-Provence, take the D10 departmental road; traffic and restrictions may vary. Before setting off, check the relevant dates and current access conditions for the activities you have planned.
