Rognes brings together marked trails, historic buildings and festival traditions spread across different seasons. When planning your trip, it helps to start with a simple question: would you like to set aside time for outdoor activities, or plan your stay around a cultural event or festival? One particularly well-defined hiking option is the six-kilometre Boucle de la Chapelle; events take place from summer through to the Sunday before Christmas.

Hiking trails and outdoor activities

The Caireval et Tresquemoure area has mountain biking trails, a fitness trail, marked hiking paths, picnic areas and parking. The facilities offer different ways to stay active as well as a place to take a break: hiking, mountain biking and exercise alongside picnic areas. If you are looking for a named trail with a specific distance, the Sentier des Vignerons de Rognes is another option. It includes the six-kilometre Boucle de la Chapelle.

The distinction can help you choose: Caireval et Tresquemoure offers several types of recreational activity, while the Boucle specifies a particular distance. The name Sentier des Vignerons also puts the connection with wine front and centre. You can decide whether to include an area with a range of activities in your plans or opt for a specific hiking route.

Traces of history

The Foussa Plateau is considered the cradle of the historic village of Rognes. The parish church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is built against the town walls. Construction began at the end of 1607; the church was completed around 1610.

The Fontaine 1568 also connects several points in time. It was built in 1568 as a communal fountain, repaired and rebuilt several times over the centuries, and took on its present appearance in 1868 in particular. The year 1568 marks its construction, while 1868 is significant for its current appearance. Water flows from four spouts bearing bearded mascaron faces.

The Vierge du Foussa is a six-metre-high ex-voto carved directly into the rock. It depicts the Virgin Mary in profile and was created in gratitude for Rognes’s protection during the Second World War and the Liberation. The work thus brings together a religious depiction and the reason for its creation.

Festivals throughout the year

In summer, the Festival aux Carrières transforms the former quarries into an open-air stage. The programme includes classical music, jazz, rock, electronic music, cinema and performances. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your intended year of travel.

At the end of September, the pilgrimage tradition continues at the Chapelle et ermitage Saint-Marcellin. It includes an open-air mass, the blessing of the grape harvest and a shared meal in the hermitage grounds. In October, small aniseed breads are handed out after mass at the FĂŞte de Saint-Denis. The autumn events therefore have different focuses: at Saint-Marcellin, the blessing of the grape harvest is part of the pilgrimage, while the aniseed breads take centre stage at the FĂŞte de Saint-Denis.

Another culinary event is the Grand Marché « Truffes et Gastronomie ». It has been held every year since 1989 on the Sunday before Christmas. This connection with the Christmas calendar makes the timing easy to identify; check the calendar for your intended year of travel to find the exact date.
