Reed beds, birdwatching, scenic views and walking trails give Rognac several different ways to shape a trip. You can focus your stay on wetlands, a hike or sailing, depending on the experiences you have in mind.
Wetland, Birdlife and Views
The Vallat estuary is a wetland with reed beds. On the side of the Massif de l’Arbois facing Rognac, you can spot more than 20 bird species, including Bonelli’s eagle. The Croix de Rognac overlooks the town and offers an exceptional viewpoint over the Étang de Berre and the town. Alongside birdwatching, the landscape and wetland are therefore other distinct interests.
Hikes Around Rognac
The Rognac Heritage and Marais de la Tête Noire Trail is an easy, eight-kilometre circular route. It passes through the marshes and along the coastal path. The trail is listed as taking one hour, or two and a half hours for the option through the marshes. These times can help you gauge the outing based on the route you choose. There is a parking area for the trail at the lower end of Avenue Jean Jaurès; it is also possible to travel there by public transport. Check local access conditions before setting off.
Some of the riverside habitats along the trail are accessible to people with reduced mobility. This applies expressly to only part of the route. If this is important for your plans, check the conditions for the section you intend to visit.
For a longer hike, consider section A18 of the GR2013: this easy 13.4-kilometre route starts in Rognac. It runs from the Corniche de Rognac towards Gare Aix TGV and is described as a way to explore the Massif de l’Arbois. The Vallon de Valbacol and the so-called Marlène Dietrich Theatre are along the section. Compared with the eight-kilometre circular route, A18 offers a longer route option; check local trail conditions before setting off.
Sailing and Water Sports
The Cercle Nautique de Rognac welcomes individuals, families and groups of friends. Activities on offer include catamaran sailing, Laser sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing and wingfoiling. The 2026 programme also includes sailing courses for children and teenagers aged 7 to 17. The Base nautique de Rognac offers sailing lessons for all levels, including on Optimist dinghies, Lasers, catamarans and windsurf boards. These offerings provide different points to consider when planning, such as the age group for the 2026 course programme or the lessons available for all levels. Check the current programme and seasonal operating details before making plans.
Architectural Heritage and Trip Planning
The Église Saint-Jacques is one of the architectural heritage features listed for protection in the municipal PLU. Construction of the church was ordered on 14 June 1664; the plans were drawn up by the architect Jaubert of Aix. This makes it possible to include a look at the town’s architectural history as part of your visit.
When looking for accommodation in Rognac, you can start by deciding which activities will shape your trip: the circular route to the Marais de la Tête Noire, the longer GR2013 section, the view from the Croix de Rognac or a sailing activity. If you want to combine several interests, set aside time for them and check the relevant conditions in advance.
