Puyloubier lies on the southern slope of Sainte-Victoire and combines hiking trails with chapels, traces of the Middle Ages and a distinctive history. When looking for a hotel in Puyloubier, you can first consider whether hiking or culture will shape your stay: there are different starting points for both, from nature trails to historic sites.

Hiking trails on Sainte-Victoire

Puyloubier is a starting point for hiking trails on Sainte-Victoire. Two long-distance hiking trails also pass through the commune: the GR9 and the Italian branch of the Way of St. James, the GR 653 A. Both cross Puyloubier; information about these routes should be distinguished from the specific trail descriptions of the themed paths.

The Sentier botanique de Saint-Ser is a two-hour botanical nature trail created by the Grand Site Sainte-Victoire. The Sentier des Vignerons has a different focus: this three-hour hiking trail starts at the cooperative winery and passes oratories, chapels and vineyards. Information panels accompany the route. The Sentier des Vignerons also includes a long circular route covering 13 kilometres. The duration of the nature trail, the three-hour hike and the length of this circular route offer different points of reference for your planning.

The Sentier des Vignerons bears the “Tourisme & Handicap” label and enables people with intellectual or hearing impairments to enjoy the landscape and cultural experiences inclusively. Check the label and trail conditions before setting out. If you would like to plan your trip around the annual public hiking day “Puyloubier Sainte-Victoire,” it is organised by the Syndicat d’initiative of Puyloubier; check the event dates.

Saint-Ser: chapel, pilgrimage tradition and climbing

The Chapelle Ermitage Saint-Ser can be reached on foot from the Saint-Ser car park on the D17 between Saint-Antonin and Puyloubier. The site has a long religious tradition: a pilgrimage has been held there every Whit Monday since the 14th century. The Chapelle Ermitage Saint-Ser was consecrated on 5 January 1001 by Amalric, Bishop of Aix-en-Provence.

There are also climbing areas at Saint-Ser on the rocks of the Ermitage and the Vallée de la Tine; routes are graded for all levels of difficulty. On the Puyloubier–Chapelle Saint-Ser–Pic des Mouches route, an orientation table at Pic des Mouches helps you make sense of the panorama. Check its condition during your visit.

Traces of the castle and earlier times

The restored fortification walls of Puyloubier formed part of the enclosure that protected the medieval castle. They were restored between 2012 and 2015. The Chapelle Saint-Roch also tells the story of the area: it dates from the 13th century. The Chapelle Saint-Pancrace stands on the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa, but is not usually open to visitors. Visits are possible only on request and on a special occasion.

The cultural offerings also include the Puyloubier branch of the Musée de la Légion étrangère at the Domaine du Capitaine Danjou. It displays a unique uniform collection dating from 1831 to 1968. The branch is currently closed for extensive renovations; it is scheduled to reopen in summer 2027. Check this information again before planning your trip.

The Domaine Saint-Ser produces olive oil with the protected designation of origin AOP Aix-en-Provence. This adds a regional product to the hiking and cultural attractions.
