Twelve hectares of botanical gardens, viewpoints along the Route des Crêtes and the history of Eden Théâtre give La Ciotat several different attractions to focus on during a stay. If you want to divide your time between walks, a clearly defined hike and cinema culture, you can plan these destinations around the activities you prefer. The Natura 2000 site and the seasonal connection to Île Verte add a maritime perspective to the options.

Park and Route des Crêtes

Parc du Mugel covers 12 hectares and has been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” label. As a botanical park, it invites visitors to take walks and discover numerous regional plants, including some very rare species. A stroll through the park is also an opportunity to learn about the region’s plant life.

Viewpoints along the Route des Crêtes offer views of the bay of La Ciotat, the old town and Île Verte. The Semaphore on the route dates from 1791 and stands at an altitude of 349 metres. Le Pont Naturel is a natural rock arch formed by erosion. The viewpoints, historic structure and geological formation each add a distinct feature along the route.

The hike from the Semaphore to Cap Canaille is rated moderate. It takes three hours, covers 7.6 kilometres and includes 576 metres of ascent. These details help you gauge the time and elevation involved. Check for current restrictions due to wildfire risk and weather before setting out.

Cinema History at Eden Théâtre

On 21 March 1899, the first paid film screening in La Ciotat took place at Eden Théâtre. The cinema was built in 1889 and faithfully renovated in 2013. It is considered the oldest cinema in the world still in operation. Eden Théâtre is therefore one of the places where a specific event in cinema history is connected with the story of a cinema that continues to operate today.

The association Les Lumières de l’Eden offers guided tours of the venue, including the auditorium, as well as film screenings. The films cover cinema, the Lumière family and the origins of cinema in La Ciotat. Check the current visitor arrangements before booking.

The Sea and Nautical Activities

The Baie de La Ciotat Natura 2000 site is entirely marine and covers a total of 1,755 hectares. It is a marine area, while walks in Parc du Mugel and the viewpoints along the Route des Crêtes offer different kinds of nature experiences.

The seasonal Aquilade shuttle connects Port-Vieux with Île Verte; the crossing takes 15 minutes. Before travelling, check whether the service is currently operating and what payment options are available.

Base Nautique de La Ciotat has been awarded a 4-star label. It recognises the quality of its services and the range of nautical activities it offers, which are accessible to everyone. Individual operators and activities may change. If a particular experience is essential to your plans, check the relevant offer.
