At the Château de La Barben, a long building history meets a seasonal programme of performances. The former fortress was built on a rocky outcrop in the 11th century and transformed into a pleasure palace in the 17th century. Rocher Mistral presents six performances at the château; the number and programme may vary by season. Check the seasonal programme before your visit.
Château, Churches and Local History
The protection established by decree on 21 December 1984 covers the Château de La Barben and its formal garden, including the entrance gates, four pools, two fountains, the statue and the terraces. Also listed are the access ramp with its retaining wall, the two entrance gates, the plane-tree avenue and the bridge over the river. The historic site therefore extends beyond the château to include garden features and access routes.
Near the château stands the small Romanesque church of Saint-Jean, whose history dates back to the 11th century. It has been dedicated to Saint-Sauveur since the 15th century. The Église Saint-Sauveur also houses a fully restored Transfiguration by Mimault, dating from 1632. The church and painting offer a different perspective from the château’s architectural history: here, the focus is on a religious site and a specific work of art.
Another trace of the past leads to the Source d’Adane. It has been visited since antiquity and once powered numerous mills and a laundry. The spring is therefore also linked to the historic use of water. This story adds another aspect of local history to the heritage of the château and church.
Trails, Holm Oaks and Wildlife
At Puits de Madame, there is a 3-kilometre discovery trail and a 6-kilometre walking route. The route lengths provide a clear basis for comparing the two options. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The trail network at Parc animalier de La Barben covers 9 kilometres among holm oaks. The park extends across a 33-hectare natural area classified as a Natura 2000 site and serving as an LPO wildlife refuge. Wildlife is another key attraction alongside the natural setting: visitors can discover more than 130 animal species and nearly 700 animals from around the world. These species and animal counts may change over time.
