A 1-hour-and-30-minute walk through the old town takes you around Gardanne’s Castrum and its narrow streets. The town also has connections to Cézanne, a mining history and a particular focus on Mediterranean forest. For planning purposes, these themes can be considered separately: historic sites and exhibitions sit alongside nature interpretation and several trails, each with its own features.

Old town, Cézanne and everyday history

The “Visite de la vieille ville” is a one-hour-and-30-minute walk around the Castrum. Those interested in the painter can choose a different focus with “Cézanne et le paysage”: this route passes through the old town and over Colline des Frères, which Cézanne visited to paint some of his most significant works. Both experiences connect Gardanne with its history, but emphasize different aspects.

The Musée Gardanne Autrefois depicts scenes of traditional life in two village houses dating from 1850 to 1950, as well as in the former chapel of the White Penitents. The rooms and themes on display range from a kitchen, dining area and bedroom to a classroom, traditional crafts, toys and wartime memories. Domestic life and other aspects of life in the past are presented side by side. The history of the mining basin is also part of the picture: the Puits Yvon Morandat, southwest of Gardanne, contributed to its cultural and social character.

Mediterranean forest: exhibition and discovery trail

The Ecomusée de la Forêt Méditerranéenne explores the diversity, history and vulnerability of Mediterranean forest ecosystems in a playful, interactive way. Its exhibitions cover 1,000 square metres over three floors. They also explore the secrets of the soil and different habitats. The Ecomusée thus offers a way to explore the subject of forests through exhibition content, not just through the landscape outdoors.

The Ecomusée also includes a purpose-built trail through a 13-hectare wooded park. The approximately 1.5-kilometre discovery trail combines puzzles, a maze and word games. Those interested in nature interpretation can treat these stops as a separate experience to complement their visit to the exhibition. The walk through the old town and the forest trail differ both in subject and in their stated duration or length.

Trails through landscape and history

The Circuit de La Luynes follows the Luynes River for a long stretch. Along the way, it takes in riverside vegetation and a waterfall; century-old plane trees stand around the Pavillon du roi René. The Circuit des Crêtes offers a different focus: during the hike, viewpoints look out over the Massifs de l’Étoile, de Sainte-Victoire and du Ventoux. The hike also explores the inland limestone hills of Basse-Provence, with their characteristic flora, including endemic and rare species.

Historic traces are also relevant here. Among the remains along the Circuit des Crêtes is the Ruine Bastide Nouveau, acquired by the town of Gardanne. At the Sentier du Mur de Gueidan stands a stone wall built in 1692. It served to protect livestock from wolves, feral dogs and theft. Along the Sentier du Bois du Verdillon, wooden botanical signs offer information about local plants; an orientation table stands at the highest point. The Circuit des Vallons crosses the Canal de Provence and joins the GRP Mines d’Énergie.

For cycling, “À la découverte de Gardanne à vélo” is described as a 15-stage tour. It is rated easy and covers 19.9 kilometres. These details make it a clearly defined cycling option alongside the hiking trails, without treating the different routes as equivalent.

Crafts and events

At the Tuilerie Bossy, visitors can meet craftspeople and discover techniques and creations in sculpture, mosaic, furniture making, watchmaking, pottery and blacksmithing. As you should check whether the craftspeople are available before visiting, it is advisable to confirm in advance. The traditional Arts & Festin du Monde event attracts nearly 15,000 people over a full weekend. If you plan to attend, check the specific dates and programme in advance.
