The former village of Tournefort lies at an elevation of more than 600 metres, while various hiking routes lead to villages, a trail connection and the area around Fort du Pic Charvet. Churches, castle walls and the fort tell different parts of the village’s history. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider landscape, culture and hiking as distinct but complementary interests.

Elevation and the former village

The former village of Tournefort stands at an elevation of more than 600 metres and can be reached by a wide staircase. From there, the view extends over the surrounding valleys and terrain. This combination of a historic site and expansive landscape makes the elevation an important part of a visit to the village.

At the northern end of the ridge on which the former village stood is the Chapelle Saint-Antoine. From the former site of Tournefort, the Chapelle Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue and the parish church stand out together against an exceptional panorama.

Choose a hike based on its destination

The Tour du mont Falourde offers the chance to visit the villages of Massoins and Tournefort. At marker 184, it joins the Tournefort–Bairols hiking trail. The villages are the destinations visited, while the marker indicates the connection to another trail. The area around Fort du Pic Charvet can be explored on a hike starting from the village of Tournefort. This makes the route options clear: two named villages on the Tour du mont Falourde, a trail connection at marker 184, and the area around the fort as another destination.

Religious buildings and military history

The religious buildings date from different periods. The Chapelle des Pénitents dates from the 15th to the 16th century, while the Church of Saint-Pierre dates from the 17th century. This difference places the two buildings in separate eras and gives the cultural history a chronological thread. The surviving walls of Tournefort Castle reveal the defensive strength of the site. Fort du Pic Charvet had a specific military role: in the 19th century, it formed part of Nice’s defence system, and its main task was to control the junction of the Tinée and Var valleys. The castle walls thus show the site’s defensive strength, while the fort illustrates its role within the defence system.

A procession for the feast of Saint Anthony

A description from November 2019 recounts the procession for the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June, when villagers carry the saint’s statue. If you would like to experience the celebration, check in advance whether it is taking place this year.
