Rock engravings in high-altitude valleys, a museum dedicated to the region’s history and historic religious buildings reveal different facets of Tende. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the different starting points: the trails to Fontanalba and the Refuge des Merveilles begin in different places, while the museum and chapels offer a distinct cultural and historical perspective on Tende.

Mont Bégo: Rock Engravings and High-Mountain Landscapes

The archaeological zone of rock engravings on Mont Bégo lies within the municipality of Tende and stretches across two valleys. It is located at elevations of around 1,900 to 2,700 metres. In the Vallée des Merveilles, the landscape is high-altitude, mineral-rich and rugged, with striking peaks and numerous lakes. By contrast, the Vallée de Fontanalba is more open and has a rich variety of plant life.

The subjects of the engravings also differ: in Fontanalba, they depict the pastoral life of early shepherds during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The Musée départemental des Merveilles preserves evidence of the rock engravings from the Vallée des Merveilles and offers insight into the beliefs, daily life and culture of the peoples who lived in the area around Mont Bégo. The museum was founded in 1996 to help protect the region’s archaeological heritage.

Hiking Trails, Via Ferrata and Col de Tende

Two different starting points are important when planning a hike. From Castérino, a walk of about 2 hours and 15 minutes leads to the Lacs Jumeaux, where guided tours begin. From Lac des Mesches, it takes about three hours to walk to the Refuge des Merveilles, where guided tours also begin. These walking times refer to different routes with different starting points and destinations. So compare more than just the duration and plan each route individually; conditions can change.

The challenging Via Ferrata des Comtes Lascaris runs above the village. It passes the remains of the medieval castle of the Counts of Lascaris, the Grotte des Hérétiques and the Chapelle Saint-Sauveur. The most technically demanding section includes Tibetan and monkey bridges, as well as zip lines more than 100 metres long. Including the approach, it takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Check access and equipment requirements before your visit; equipment needs and duration may vary depending on conditions.

The Col de Tende now marks the border between France and Italy and is the starting point for numerous hikes and mountain bike routes, including routes in the direction of the Haute Route du Sel. Access conditions may vary seasonally. Among the forts at the Col de Tende, Fort Central is considered the most important defensive structure.

Chapels, Museum and Historic Sites

The Chapelle de l'Annonciation in Tende is a Baroque chapel. Its façade is decorated with trompe-l'œil motifs; inside is a monumental, polychrome and gilded altarpiece dating from 1704. The White Penitents rebuilt the chapel in 1621. The former collegiate church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Tende houses the sculptural group “Saint Michel et le dragon”.

These religious buildings and the forts at the Col de Tende offer different perspectives on the region’s cultural heritage: Baroque design, a sculptural group and military architecture. The Saint-Eloi patronal festival takes place every year on the second weekend of July. Check the festival programme for your specific travel year.

Winter Plans and Finding Accommodation

The Centre de ski nordique de Castérino is located within the municipality of Tende, at an altitude of 1,550 metres at the foot of the Parc du Mercantour. From Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende, the route follows the D91 in the direction of the Vallée des Merveilles and Parc du Mercantour; the drive takes about 20 minutes. The centre’s operation depends on the weather and snow conditions, and road conditions and seasonal restrictions may change. Check these before setting out.

The Nice–Tende railway line is also notable for its route: it climbs more than 1,000 metres from sea level. Its infrastructure includes viaducts, numerous tunnels built into the mountains and four spiral tunnels.

When looking for a hotel in Tende, it helps to distinguish between the locations: the museum and chapels are in Tende, while the two mountain walks described here begin in Castérino and at Lac des Mesches. The walking times for these routes do not include travel from accommodation to their starting points. Plan those journeys separately and choose your accommodation according to the focus of your trip.
