Saint-Dalmas-Le-Selvage is a stage on two long-distance hiking trails and also offers protected natural areas as well as religious and military architecture. When choosing what to focus on, you can weigh up different reasons for visiting: hiking, seasonal nature themes or historic buildings. This makes it possible to decide which experiences you want to shape your stay before looking for accommodation.

Natural areas and seasonal impressions

The Adret de Pra Gazé, designated as a Natura 2000 site, lies within the municipal boundaries and covers approximately 100 hectares. The Chauves-souris de la Haute-Tinée Natura 2000 site extends over 1,787 hectares in Saint-Dalmas-Le-Selvage and Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée. The two protected areas therefore differ considerably in size and geographical scope: one covers approximately 100 hectares within the municipality, while the other spans two municipalities. For nature-focused visits, this is a concrete difference between a locally confined area and one that extends across municipal boundaries.

The changing seasons also offer a special connection to the area. At the beginning of summer, the plant known as “Tête de dragon” blooms just above the village. The exact flowering time can vary, so the bloom is best treated as a seasonal indication rather than a fixed date.

Hiking, climbing and winter conditions

Saint-Dalmas-Le-Selvage is a stage on the GR5 long-distance hiking trail and the Grande Traversée du Mercantour. Numerous hikes start from Bousièyas, including several routes along the GR5 and GR56. The Tour du Bois de Ville is another route for summer. As municipal route lists may be updated, it is worth checking the latest information before making specific plans.

At Rocher de Junic, climbers can choose from around 100 equipped routes. A 15- to 20-minute walk leads to the base of the climbing routes; weather and trail conditions may affect access. The time estimate refers to the walk to the routes and can be factored in as a separate part of your plans. The icefalls in the Vallon de Gialorgues offer a different seasonal nature attraction. They are among the most beautiful in the region, although the conditions in winter determine whether they can be experienced in practice.

Chapels, church and military buildings

The Chapelle Sainte Marguerite dates from the 15th century. Its frescoes are attributed to Baleison and are believed to have been created around 1480. Individual visits are available only with a guide and by prior reservation. The parish church of Saint Dalmas dates from the early 18th century; its Romanesque-looking bell tower is dated 1718. These buildings reflect two different historical periods: the 15th-century chapel and the church with its dated bell tower.

The military history includes the Avant-poste de Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage, a fortification of the Maginot Line. Le Camp des Fourches is a high-altitude military barracks built from 1888 onwards; its restored ruins can be visited individually. Weather and seasonal conditions may affect a visit. The site lies on the Route du Col de la Bonette between the Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence départements. In alpine conditions, the road is open seasonally. These military sites add a different focus to the religious buildings, and their construction dates also differ.

Planning your stay

The Maison de Pays houses the information office of the metropolitan tourism authority. There you can get information about accommodation, shops and activities in the municipality. The office also provides advice on summer and winter hikes, activities in Auron and Isola 2000, the Parc national du Mercantour and transport options. If you are looking for accommodation or want to plan your stay around hikes and visits, this information can help you prepare.
