A carved head on an intricately worked beam end offers a tangible introduction to Puget-Théniers’ architectural history. The town also has medieval half-timbered houses, a restored 16th-century chapel and sacred art dating from different periods. There is also a self-guided interpretive trail and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the cultural sites and the weather- or season-dependent activities.
Architecture and Sacred Art
Medieval houses with overhanging upper floors and half-timbering stand on Place du Palais de Justice. The beams on the house at No. 2 Rue Brouchier are intricately worked; one also features a carved head. The overhanging upper floors and half-timbering give the houses their distinctive architectural features. The detail on Rue Brouchier belongs to a specific house and should not be attributed indiscriminately to every building on the square.
The Chapelle Sainte-Croix des Pénitents Blancs is a restored 16th-century chapel. The Galerie des Augustins is an exhibition space in the former Couvent des Augustins. Together with the houses and chapel, these offer a glimpse of different forms of architectural and cultural heritage: homes, sacred architecture and an exhibition space in a former monastery.
The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built in the 13th century and remodeled in the 17th century. The church houses the Passion altarpiece, “Groupe sculpté de la Passion,” dated to around 1525 and attributed to the workshop of Matthieu d’Anvers. The Notre Dame du Bon Secours altarpiece, by contrast, is attributed to Antoine Ronzen.
Explore the history at your own pace
The historic interpretive trail can be explored independently. 21 QR codes mark important tourist sites in the commune. This offers a different way to engage with the area than focusing on individual buildings and works of art: the trail connects information about sites throughout the commune, while the heritage items described here focus on specific objects and their history. Signage and the QR code system may be updated, so check the information before setting out.
Railway history is also part of the local heritage. Puget-Théniers railway depot houses the Fives-Lille 230 T 327 tank locomotive. It has been classified as an object since October 30, 1987. This adds a distinct aspect of technological history to the medieval houses and sacred works of art.
Activities and when to visit
Outdoor activities have quite different requirements. The Les Demoiselles du Castagnet via ferrata can be used almost year-round in favorable weather. Check the weather conditions before your visit, as access depends on them.
The Espace Eau Vive Rafting base is on the banks of the Var. From the base in Puget-Théniers, rafting, canoe-rafting, river hiking and tubing are offered from April to October; activities are seasonal and require reservations. In practical terms, weather is the key factor for the via ferrata, while the water activities depend on the season and require a reservation. If you are looking for hotels in Puget-Théniers, it is best to choose your travel dates to suit your preferred activities and check the relevant conditions before making firm plans.
