More than 8,000 objects at the Roudoule-Écomusée and a reconstructed wheelwright’s workshop at the Maison de l’Écomusée give Puget-Rostang a distinct cultural and historical focus. At the same time, the village lies in a mountain basin of limestone and marl, crossed from east to west by the Mairola. This makes it possible to focus on the museum, the landscape and other points of interest, such as the pilgrimage or a mountain biking tour, according to your interests.

Mountain basin and river course

Puget-Rostang lies in a mountain basin of limestone and marl. The Mairola flows through the village from east to west; it is a tributary of the Roudoule. The basin and the river therefore provide two different points of reference for understanding the character of the area: the basin describes its landscape setting, while the Mairola marks the course of a waterway through the village. If you would like to get your bearings in the landscape first, you can consider both features together; the museums offer a separate cultural focus.

Craftsmanship and collections at the Écomusée

The Maison de l’Écomusée has an exhibition space of 270 m². It features a reconstruction of an “atelier de charronnage” (wheelwright’s workshop), with a forge and a carpentry shop. Charronnage refers to the craft of wheelwrighting; the reconstruction presents this work in a workshop with two specifically named areas. The size of the space indicates the setting, while the workshop display focuses on a specific craft.

The Roudoule-Écomusée has a collection of more than 8,000 objects. It documents everyday life as well as the economic and social activities of an area. Its thematic scope thus extends beyond a single craft: everyday life, economic activities and social relationships are all among the subjects documented. Compared with the workshop reconstruction, the collection offers a broader view of different aspects of life, while the Maison exhibition provides a specific focus on craftsmanship. This allows visitors interested in culture to explore different aspects of the Écomusée’s themes.

Check visiting hours

The Roudoule-Écomusée has different visiting hours throughout the year. From May to September, it is open Wednesday to Sunday. From October to April, visits are possible Tuesday to Friday, except on public holidays; during this period, weekend visits are available only to groups by prior arrangement. If visiting the museum is important to your trip, check the schedule before you travel. This is especially relevant for a weekend stay, as it makes a difference whether you are travelling during the summer season or between October and April.

Pilgrimage and mountain biking tour

The Chapelle Saint-Julien stands on the Plateau de Dina at an altitude of 1,241 m. It is the destination of an annual pilgrimage at Pentecost. Altitude and the religious calendar are therefore specific points of reference for this cultural theme: one describes the chapel’s location, the other the recurring occasion. A mountain biking tour (VTT) starts in Puget-Rostang at an altitude of 700 m. The two altitude figures refer to different points—the chapel’s location on the plateau and the start of the cycling tour in Puget-Rostang. If you would like to include a religious occasion in your stay, you can plan around the Pentecost pilgrimage; if you are looking for cycling as a separate activity, there is a starting point in the village. Check the Pentecost date in advance if the pilgrimage is important to your plans.
