The old village of Peillon is a fortified medieval settlement on a rocky spur. Its distinctive character is complemented by historic monuments from different centuries and paths for walks and hikes. When planning your trip, you can treat cultural history and outdoor activities as separate highlights: the buildings tell the story of several historical periods, while the routes call for careful choice of a specific trail.

Cultural history in churches, chapels, and fountains

The Church of the Transfiguration incorporates the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque church. Frescoes by Giovanni Canavesio, dating from the 15th century, can be seen in the Chapel of the White Penitents, also known as the Chapelle Notre-Dame des sept Douleurs. The chapel was designated a Monument historique in 2000. Here, the Romanesque remains in the Church of the Transfiguration sit alongside the frescoes and the later designation of another chapel.

The Chapel of Saint-Roch also has several dates associated with its history: it dates from 1580 and was restored in 2004. On Place Arnulf stands a fountain dating from 1800, which was designated a Monument historique in 1941. These dates refer to different events—construction, restoration, and designation. Peillon’s cultural heritage cannot be reduced to a single period.

Walks, hikes, and climbing

There are numerous walking and hiking trails around Peillon, offering different ways to discover the area. Individual trails may change, so check the conditions for your planned route before setting out. For a specific hike, the 11-kilometre Lourquière loop is a useful option: it starts and ends at Grave-de-Peille station. On the return, a footpath follows a section that offers an exceptional view of the hilltop village as you leave Peillon. Check the latest trail conditions before hiking this route, too.

Another activity is climbing on the equipped climbing routes, which offer views of Peillon village. Check climbing conditions locally. Mountain biking enthusiasts can find a loop in Peillon-Sainte-Thècle in a 2015 municipal brochure. Before planning a ride, check whether the route is currently accessible.

Sainte-Thècle and the connection to the village

The Flaminius Raiberti Railway Museum in Sainte-Thècle devotes its permanent exhibitions to the history of the PLM railway network, and in particular to the construction of the single-track Nice–Cuneo line. This adds a distinct focus on the history of technology to the chapels and village scenery. If you plan to visit, check the visitor arrangements in advance.

For the walk between Peillon-Sainte-Thècle and the village, a 2015 municipal brochure gives an approximate walking time of one hour, either by road or along the municipal path. This is a guide only; check current access conditions before setting out.
