Those looking to combine cultural history with time outdoors can choose from historic buildings, year-round cultural events and several outdoor activities in Le Bar-sur-Loup. The parish church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, La Papeterie on the Loup and the GR51 represent different aspects of a stay here. You can focus on architecture, events, hiking or cycling according to your interests.

Village history between the church and the keep

The Romanesque-Gothic parish church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur was built between the 12th and 15th centuries; it is listed as a historic monument. The former 10th-century castle keep still stands on Place de la Tour. The keep therefore offers an earlier historical reference point than the parish church.

The church can be visited; from June to September, you can get the key from the tourist office in the Chapelle des Sœurs Trinitaires, and at other times from the town hall reception desk. The Bureau d’Information Touristique du Bar-sur-Loup also offers free guided tours of the village’s heritage throughout the year, by prior reservation. As access arrangements, reservation requirements and availability may change, check these details before your visit.

Culture and local history

The Musée Lou Casau displays antique objects, traditional costumes, photographs and Provençal santons; the items on display may change. La Papeterie on the Loup comprises a former paper mill and a mill first mentioned in 1570. The focus thus shifts from the history of the church and castle to papermaking and milling.

The Caves du Château cultural venue hosts concerts, exhibitions and gatherings throughout the year. These cultural events add further formats to the historic buildings and collections. Dates and programmes may change; if a concert or exhibition is important to your trip, check the programme in advance.

Hiking, cycling and scenery

Le Bar-sur-Loup is one of the 48 municipalities in the Préalpes d’Azur Regional Nature Park. Above the village, the GR51 offers several hikes, including the Canal du Loup loop and the Chemin du Paradis. Check trail conditions before setting out.

If you plan to cycle, you can choose between road cycling routes and all-mountain riding: several road cycling routes pass through Le Bar-sur-Loup, and all-mountain mountain biking is possible year-round, although trail conditions may vary. Hang-gliding and paragliding are also possible in Le Bar-sur-Loup. Whether you can take part depends on conditions and local providers.

La Papeterie is set in a natural area where fauna and flora thrive in peaceful surroundings; a path leads to the Loup.

Festivals and market dates

Since 1994, the Fête de l’Oranger has been held every Easter Monday. It combines a craft market with street entertainment, workshops and exhibitions. A local producers’ market is held on the second Tuesday of each month at Square Seytre. The events follow different schedules: the festival takes place on Easter Monday, while the market is held on the second Tuesday of the month. The festival programme and market schedule may change; check the details for your travel dates in advance.
