An easy hike of around an hour and a half, frescoes dating from 1526, and a canal that crosses the village for about 2,670 metres: La Roquette-Sur-Var brings together striking landscapes, cultural history and engineering works. Those choosing the village for a discovery trip can explore its different sides—on a hike, by taking in the surrounding landscape and learning about the history of its structures.

Ridges and hiking trails

The village lies on a narrow ridge running from east to west, at an altitude of 380 metres. On the western side of La Roquette-Sur-Var, Pointe de la Fubia reaches 566 metres. These elevations locate the village and the peak in the landscape; the ridge’s orientation also gives the village a clearly recognisable geographic form.

The Circuit de l’Adrech starts in La Roquette-Sur-Var and is an easy hike of about 2.5 kilometres. The total duration is around one hour and 30 minutes. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The Circuit de la Roquette leads into the village and takes in its small squares, the recently restored church and an impressive viewpoint overlooking the Var Valley. Numerous olive groves shape the landscape along the way. The descent follows a path along the ridge of a broad, bare outcrop of alluvial puddingstone. The route thus brings both the village and the landscape into view.

The two routes offer different points of reference for planning: the distance and total duration are given for the Circuit de l’Adrech, while the Circuit de la Roquette focuses on the village, viewpoint and landscape. This information helps you choose between the hikes based on what you would like to focus on, without assuming a walking time that has not been specified for the Circuit de la Roquette.

Canal, engineering and orientation

The Vésubie Canal crosses La Roquette-Sur-Var for about 2,670 metres. This infrastructure includes the Siphon de Saint-Blaise, a remarkable engineering structure forming part of the canal. It extends across several municipalities, including La Roquette-Sur-Var. In addition to its trails and elevation, the canal and siphon give the village another, technical dimension.

The remarkable Portalet site has had three orientation panels since 2009. They help visitors and hikers discover the surrounding panoramas. Together with the viewpoint overlooking the Var Valley, these points of reference offer a way to explore the landscape without requiring a particular hiking route.

Chapel and local history

The Chapel of Notre-Dame-del-Bosc preserves frescoes dating from 1526, attributed to Andrea de Cella. Pierre de Belletruche financed the chapel’s decoration. The date and named attribution give the artwork a specific historical context; the chapel thus connects the village’s history with a named workshop and patronage context.

The restoration of the old chapel is also part of its history: part of the compensation received by the residents of La Roquette went towards its partial restoration. The word “partial” is important here; it does not describe a complete renovation of the building.

Castel Vieil is considered to be the first settlement of La Roquette-Sur-Var. A Ligurian community probably lived there; the site was later inhabited in Roman times and during the Middle Ages. The cautious identification of the early community and the chronological sequence go together: Ligurian settlement remains a probability, while the later use of the site in Roman times and the Middle Ages is also part of the historical picture of the village.

Hiking trails, landscapes, technical infrastructure and historic structures thus offer different perspectives on La Roquette-Sur-Var. When planning a stay, visitors can distinguish the Circuit de l’Adrech, for which a duration is specified, from the landscape and cultural features of the Circuit de la Roquette, and consider the frescoes and the history of Castel Vieil as further topics to explore in the village.
