In Châteauneuf-D'entraunes, the landscape quickly changes from mid-mountain terrain to alpine meadows and rugged peaks. This gives a stay several possible focuses: a long hike, a mountain-biking circuit or visits to historic buildings and mills. The different time estimates and seasonal visiting opportunities are particularly useful when planning your trip.

Landscape and trails around Châteauneuf-D'entraunes

At Collet de Sen, a biotope protection order protects birds of prey and makes it possible to observe them. The remains of an old observatory lie on Cime de l'Aspre. So, if you plan the hike there, you will find a historic structure at the destination as well as changing scenery along the way.

The hike to Cime de l'Aspre starts in Châteauneuf-D'entraunes and takes about seven hours as a circular route. The stated elevation gain and descent are each 1,200 metres; the recommended season is from July to October. It therefore takes considerably longer than the mountain-biking circuit to Hameau des Tourres: this moderately difficult route also starts in the village, is 14 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The comparison helps with planning your day without treating the two activities as equivalent: they involve different ways of getting around and different time frames.

Village architecture and sacred art

At Hameau des Tourres, the architecture typical of the rural buildings of the upper Var valley has been preserved. This includes stone walls built with lime mortar and larch-shingle roofs. The buildings thus give a tangible impression of the materials and forms that define this place.

Église Saint-Nicolas also features several architectural and artistic details: it has a Baroque interior, a single-nave layout and two side chapels. Of particular note is the altarpiece “Christ aux Cinq Plaies” by François Bréa, dating from around 1555. At the foot of Châteauneuf-D'entraunes, Chapelle Saint-Antoine also stands at a crossroads of former mule tracks. Together, these places offer different insights into the village’s architectural and artistic history, without needing to be linked into a walking route.

Mills, visits and regional produce

Moulin de la Barlatte is one of the last working mills in the Alps. Weekly visits take place there in July and August, organised by the municipality and guided by a mountain guide. Check the dates locally before your trip. The Fête du moulin, held at the mill every June, is a separate event; you should also confirm the date of this year’s event in advance. A seasonal discovery hike takes in the area around Moulin de la Barlatte and the village.

Ferme de la Barlatte welcomes families and other interested visitors for farm tours by prior arrangement. If you would like to plan a visit, arrange it in advance. From February to September, the farm produces fresh and matured lactic cheeses, tommes and yoghurt. These products and the opportunity to visit are two distinct aspects of the farm; neither a tasting nor sales are implied.

Plan your stay and journey

A specific accommodation option in the village is Le Carré du Mercantour, a gîte in Châteauneuf-D'entraunes on the GR 52A, at the entrance to Parc National du Mercantour. Check availability for your travel dates if you are considering this accommodation as a base. The road route from Guillaumes to Châteauneuf-D'entraunes follows the RD 74.

Choose the focus of your stay accordingly: Cime de l'Aspre makes for a long day of hiking, while the mountain-biking circuit to Hameau des Tourres involves a different time frame. If you are interested in architecture and history, you can explore Église Saint-Nicolas, Chapelle Saint-Antoine or Moulin de la Barlatte. Bear in mind the mill’s seasonal visiting hours and the need to arrange a farm visit in advance.
