Auron offers a range of different experiences: the ski area has 135 km of slopes, the hike to Cime de la Bercha winds through larch forests, and Chapelle Saint Erige brings together architectural history and a pilgrimage tradition. When planning your stay, you can start by deciding whether you’re mainly looking for winter sports, a particular hike or a visit focused on history.
Auron Ski Area: Slopes and Four Sectors
The ski area covers the sectors of Las Donnas, Sauma Longue, Demandols and Lieuson. Together with its 135 km of slopes, the sectors give you an overview of the area’s size and layout. Names and operating divisions may change, so check the latest information before your visit. The ski area also has snow parks for children and beginners. Individual facilities may vary by season, so it’s worth checking the current offerings when planning your visit.
This lets you plan a winter stay around your own priorities without assuming that the size of the ski area guarantees particular facilities or conditions on your travel dates. If the snow parks are important to you, check their current status separately.
Hiking to Cime de la Bercha
Cime de la Bercha offers sweeping views of Parc National du Mercantour. Larch forests shape the landscape along the way, and the route is also notable for its rich botanical diversity. The hike is listed as taking four hours round trip, with an elevation change of plus/minus 628 metres. These figures give you a concrete basis for factoring the time and elevation change into your plans. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Les Balcons d’Auron offers a different option: the circular trail is 2.5 km long and has ten interpretation stations. The two trails therefore have different information to consider: the Cime de la Bercha hike lists duration and elevation change, while Les Balcons d’Auron lists distance and the number of stations. The Les Balcons d’Auron viewpoint can be reached via Puy d’Auron. This lets you choose according to the kind of outing information that matters most to you, without measuring the two options by the same criteria.
Chapelle Saint Erige: History and Visits
Chapelle Saint Erige was built in the 13th century or the first half of the 14th century and has been a pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages. It offers a historical focus distinct from the ski slopes and hiking trails. From 5 July to 26 August 2026, guided tours were scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 4:30 pm. Booking was through the Auron Tourist Office, the contribution was voluntary, and the meeting point was the chapel. Outside the season, visits can be arranged by request through the tourist office. If you’re planning a future visit, it’s a good idea to confirm the dates and booking details with the office.
Other Activities and Choosing Your Accommodation
Another activity is Auron Boot Camp, an obstacle course in the forest. Check its seasonal availability in advance. The different options offer different experiences: winter sports in the ski area, botanical diversity and views on the way to Cime de la Bercha, interpretation stations at Les Balcons d’Auron, or a historical visit to the chapel.
If you’re planning a visit to the chapel, check the visiting dates; for a hike, it’s worth checking trail conditions. This way, you can choose activities that you actually want to include instead of assuming that several different outings are part of a fixed itinerary.
