Chapels dating back several centuries, a covered washhouse and two hikes of different lengths give Mezel a clear framework for an exploratory trip. A one-hour circular route of 3.3 kilometers leads to the Chapelle Notre-Dame; the family-friendly out-and-back hike along the Asse covers ten kilometers. This lets you compare a short loop with a stated walking time against a longer route, while deciding whether religious architecture, everyday history or lavender should be the main focus.
Cultural history in churches and by the water
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire was formerly the parish church of Mézel and existed before 1600. The Église Saint-Laurent was rebuilt in 1734; one of its side chapels contains a statue of Saint Joseph dating from the last quarter of the 17th century.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Liesse is associated with an original structure dating from the 11th century, which then belonged to Montmajour Abbey. Apparently, nothing remains of this original structure. The chapel’s votive function was established in the 19th century in connection with the rescue of a person swept away by the floodwaters of the Asse. Thus, a medieval connection and a later votive history must be distinguished at this site.
Water in the village also tells of everyday life in the past: the covered washhouse at Fonténil was built after 1822. The Fontaine du Mitan was essential to family life when running water was not yet available at sinks. The washhouse and fountain complement the religious buildings with a glimpse of the practical importance of water in everyday life.
Hikes of different lengths
The easy, one-hour circular route to the Chapelle Notre-Dame starts in Mezel, is 3.3 kilometers long and includes 170 meters of elevation gain. A family-friendly path climbs from the town hall to the chapel on a hill. The descent follows the Chemin de Bimont through olive groves and heathland. The walking time, distance and elevation gain give you concrete points of reference for fitting this loop into your day.
The family-friendly out-and-back hike Rive de l’Asse depuis Mézel is also ten kilometers long and follows the Asse. It takes a small road downhill towards Bellegarde, passing Clos d’Auran and Veissel. In terms of distance, the 3.3-kilometer Chapelle loop compares with the ten-kilometer out-and-back hike. Check the trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
