La Condamine-Châtelard lies at the confluence of the Ubaye and the Parpaillon mountain stream. Cultural history, trails through high-mountain scenery and seasonal winter sports give different character to the choice of destination. You can weigh up which of these should shape your stay by considering the landscape and the routes described.

From the Valley to High-Mountain Scenery

The southern approach to the Parpaillon Valley from La Condamine-Châtelard covers about 1,400 metres of elevation gain over 18 kilometres. The landscape ranges from larch forests to alpine pastures and rocks, then to large scree cones. At the top, the route passes through uninhabited high-mountain terrain. As you climb, the landscape changes from larch forests to alpine pastures and rocks, and then to large scree cones.

The confluence of the Ubaye and Parpaillon is also a defining feature of the village’s setting. The Tour du Grand Bérard route offers a different view of the mountain landscape: it overlooks mineral-rich mountain valleys that stand in contrast to the alpine pastures where livestock graze. This contrast shows how varied the landscape can be within the same mountain region.

Fort de Tournoux and Culture

Fort de Tournoux is a 19th-century military fortress on a rocky outcrop between La Condamine-Châtelard and Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye. The complex extends across almost 700 metres of elevation. It was built between 1843 and 1865 to secure access to the Col de Larche; the Batterie des Caurres was added in 1880. The complex has been listed as a historic monument since 28 June 2016.

Visits to the Batterie des Caurres are subject to specific conditions: during the regular visiting season from May to September, it can be visited only on a guided tour and by prior reservation. Check the latest visiting dates before you travel. This allows you to account for the seasonal, guided visits in your plans without assuming that the site can be visited at any time.

Below the fort is the Espace culturel Pellegrin, housed in the last surviving military building from the early 20th century. It hosts exhibitions, live events, film screenings, conferences and debates. This range of activities complements the military history with a cultural programme; individual events and programmes may vary.

Hiking Loops and Cultural Landscape

The Les Métairies hiking loop starts in La Condamine, passes through Le Châtelard and Mareilles, and goes by the métairies of Serre, Grach Haut, Grach Bas and la Chapelue. The route crosses a cultural landscape shaped by generations of farmers who lived in substantial, isolated métairies. It therefore links these named farms with the history of how the landscape was used.

Another circular route option is the Tour des Chapelles. It starts in Le Châtelard in La Condamine-Châtelard and links four chapels with isolated farms; some of these farms have been abandoned. The two routes therefore offer different points of interest: Les Métairies passes named métairies, while the Tour des Chapelles connects chapels and scattered farms. Trail conditions may change.

Winter Planning and Access to the Parpaillon Tunnel

The Sainte-Anne ski area lies between 1,800 and 2,400 metres above sea level and has 35 kilometres of pistes, 13 runs and six ski lifts. The operating season may change; check the latest information before making plans based on it. The altitude and the stated numbers of pistes and lifts give a concrete idea of the ski area, but do not replace checking the conditions for the relevant season.

The Parpaillon Tunnel is freely accessible, but it is not open year-round. Weather conditions and closure dates affect access from La Condamine-Châtelard. During closures, motor vehicles are not allowed on the access road. Check the latest snow and closure conditions before setting off. This lets you account both for the seasonal opening and for the specific restriction on motor vehicles.
