At an altitude of 793 m, Beynes overlooks the Asse plain. In the village, hiking trails meet geological features and traces of history. When choosing a route, you can distinguish between trails described as family outings and a circular route explicitly rated difficult. A moderately difficult mountain bike loop is also among the options described.

Beynes Between Views of the Asse and Geological History

The Panorama de Beynes offers a view of the Asse valley and an insight into geological history. Tertiary and Quaternary conglomerates and sandstones can be seen here, tilted fully vertical by the uplift of the Alps. The viewpoint and rock formations are found side by side: those interested in the landscape and its geological origins will find a tangible point of interest here, alongside the view of the valley.

The summit meadows of Montagne de Beynes also have a special connection to nature: several groups of red-legged partridges live there. Sightings cannot be guaranteed. The route to Montagne de Beynes also passes through the protected area of the Haute-Provence Geological Nature Reserve. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out.

Choose a Hike by Time and Difficulty

The Boucle de Palus and the hike to Hameau de Creisset offer different time commitments. The Boucle de Palus is a moderately difficult family hike starting in Beynes: it is 7.9 km long and takes 2 hours 30 minutes. The marked circular route to Creisset is rated difficult; allow considerably more time for its 9.6 km, 500 m elevation gain and 3 hours 30 minutes. This lets you make your choice based on distance, duration and stated difficulty.

The hike to Hameau de Creisset starts at the Passerelle du Creisset in Beynes. Along the way, it leads to the ruins of a castle and an abandoned village that was still inhabited in the last century. The route thus combines specific trail information with traces of earlier settlement. Those interested in the history of a place will find a different focus here than on the Boucle de Palus.

Another option is the “Pont romain – Chapelle Saint-André” route. It crosses a Roman bridge and reaches the Chapelle Saint-André via a balcony trail. The route is described as a family outing through a wild and protected landscape, in a less frequented section of the Gorges de Trévans. The bridge and chapel give this hike its own cultural interest; trail conditions can change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Mountain Biking Around Beynes and Palus

The moderately difficult Les hameaux de Beynes mountain bike loop is 15.5 km long, takes 1 hour 30 minutes and includes 443 m of climbing. It runs from Mézel via Beynes towards Palus; on the return, it follows a trail above the Asse valley. Compared with the hikes, both the mode of travel and the stated route figures are different. As trail conditions can change, it is best to check this information and the conditions before riding.

Village Church, Castle and Early History

The village church stands at the highest point in Beynes and is built directly onto the rock. Its pink dressed stone and Roman-tile roof give the building a distinctive architectural profile. The ruins of a fortified castle dating from the 12th century recall another era: in 1591, Protestant troops took refuge in the castle. The site of Beynes has been used since prehistoric times.

Beynes is also the starting point for several hiking trails, including one to the Église de Sainte-Madeleine et Saint-Etienne. Together with the route to Creisset, which leads to the ruins of an abandoned village, this shows that history here is not confined to a single building. You can also encounter it along the trails and at various historic sites.
