In Barcelonnette, collections housed in a villa, a fully pedestrianized town center and Alpine activities come together. A promenade leads from the pedestrian zone past villas to a viewpoint overlooking the valley. This lets you discover the town through its culture, town life and outdoor activities.
Culture and Mexican History
The Musée de la Vallée is a Musée de France and is housed in Villa La Sapinière, a villa built in 1878 in the center of Barcelonnette. Its collections include fine art, archaeology, ethnography, natural history and photography. The museum thus brings together artistic, social and natural history themes; at the same time, the villa offers a tangible link to the town’s architectural history.
An annual event with its own cultural focus is the Fêtes latino mexicaines: held in August, they comprise ten days of festivities in the town’s streets. The program includes mariachi music, dancers in colorful costumes and activities related to Aztec culture. In the wider Ubaye Valley, guided tours of Mexican villas tell the story of the Ubayens who returned from Mexico in the 19th century. Availability and dates for these tours may vary by season.
A guided tour of Barcelonnette also connects architecture with another part of the town’s history. The outdoor walking tour “Les villas de Barcelonnette et les tombes monumentales du cimetière” passes villas featuring Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences and includes a visit to monumental tombs in the cemetery.
Town Center, Market and Walk
The town center is entirely closed to traffic and is ideal for a leisurely stroll. Lively squares such as Place Manuel have terraces. The market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings at Place Aimé Gassier. Local producers and craftspeople from the Ubaye sell their products directly there. As market days may change, it is best to check locally before your arrival.
The Promenade du Verger starts in the pedestrian zone, passes Barcelonnette’s villas, including the Musée de la Sapinière, and reaches a viewpoint overlooking the valley. The route thus combines the town’s architecture with views of the surrounding landscape. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
For information about hiking trails and sights, the Maison du Parc de Barcelonnette is located in the Parc de la Sapinière. Admission is free, and it also provides information about the biodiversity of the Mercantour and the rules in force in the national park. Visitor services and seasonal opening arrangements may change; check the current conditions before your visit.
Golf, Cycling and Getting There
The Golf du Bois Chenu course near Barcelonnette has nine holes and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. For cyclists, the Brevet des 7 cols is a challenge covering seven Alpine passes. Examples include the Col de la Bonette, the Col de Vars, the Col d’Allos and the Col de la Cayolle. Pass access and cycling restrictions may vary with the weather and season; check conditions before your ride.
Regular ZOU! bus services connect Barcelonnette with numerous cities, including Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. If traveling by train or TGV, Marseille Saint-Charles, Aix-en-Provence TGV or Gap are possible arrival stations; rental cars or regional express buses are available for the onward journey. As services and timetables may change, check your connections before traveling.
