Saint-Benoît can be explored through several themes: the history of the abbey, Romanesque architecture, riverside walking areas, as well as gardens, art and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between these highlights: culture and architectural history sit alongside landscape and seasonal offerings.

Abbey, Architecture and History

Saint-Benoît Abbey was founded in the 7th century, destroyed in the 9th century and rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries. This timeline places its history into clearly distinct periods.

Admission to the abbey is free; a lift also provides access for people with reduced mobility. Conferences and temporary exhibitions are held on site. Check the latest information on access and the programme before your visit.

The Salle capitulaire is suitable for small exhibitions and workshops. The Romanesque church of Saint-André, which overlooks the Miosson Valley, provides another architectural highlight. Its façade dates from the 11th century; it also has a tall Gothic spire.

The Arcs de Parigny, remains of a Gallo-Roman aqueduct, are located in the park of the Ermitage estate. The estate is now used as a serviced residence. The Arcs de Parigny comprise a row of three arches from the Roman aqueduct remains at l’Hermitage. As the surroundings of the estate may affect access, check in advance whether and how the arches can be accessed.

The remains of the Roman aqueduct at l’Hermitage were listed as a historic monument by decree on 28 June 1927.

Riversides, Gardens and Outdoor Art

The Miosson Valley is characterised by rocks and shady paths, and has an idyllic atmosphere. The Jardin de Bayou is one of the walking and garden areas along the riversides of Saint-Benoît. The circuit de la ripisylve is also a walking route along the commune’s riversides. The garden area and walking route offer different ways to take in the landscape of the area.

The Jardin d’Images is a dedicated art highlight: this outdoor space of more than 4,000 square metres combines large-format photographs with flowers and light effects. Art and garden design thus add another dimension to the architectural history and riverside scenery.

Activities and Visit Planning

For trips on the Clain, the Canoë-Kayak Club Poitevin rents out kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards. Seasonal operations may change; check availability for your travel dates. In Saint-Benoît, the Tèrra-Aventura treasure hunt “L’Affaire Jaune Tournesol” starts at the Saint-Nicolas car park. Check before travelling whether the route is available.

Les Fleurs de Mai takes place every year in Saint-Benoît on the first weekend of May. If you want to plan around the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

The Saint-Benoît tourist information office offers in-person advice, ideas for sightseeing and activities, and recommendations for local places. As these services may change, check the current options if needed.

Choosing a Hotel by What You Want to Do

When choosing a hotel in Saint-Benoît, consider the focus of your stay: the abbey and church offer architectural and cultural history, riverside areas and gardens are suited to walks, and paddling trips on the Clain are a seasonal water activity. This can help you weigh up which side of the area you want to prioritise when planning your accommodation.
